Tacoma rap group Darxiide displays bravado, humor and even a few introspective moments on its new album.

It opens with “Wanna Bite Me,” which features a female vocalist on the chorus. The keyboards in the background are smooth, in contrast with the rat-a-tat-tat of the drum machine. One of the rappers mentions a famous rapper and pro basketball player. “West Coast rolling, I’m blazing/ like Kanye West it’s amazing/ I’m in the ‘hood all up in the streets/ like I play with the Heat but I’m not D Wade.”

The second track features more of their lyrical prowess. “My eyes are loked ‘cuz I’m blazing/ trying to focus on fadin’/ got to aim to Iron Maiden/ let my heavy metal sing.”

The third track mentions a common vice of rappers. “I’m so fresh money that I compliment my swag/ smelling like cash/ blunts rolled up mixed with hash.”

The fifth song exudes confidence. “Going 1,000 miles per hour you can’t catch me/ still in first gear barely pushing on the gas/ so stop talking about whose $#!& you gonna damage.”

The sixth track examines the significant social change represented by the election of President Barack Obama. “I believe like my grandma did way back in the day/ she used to say we’d have a black president someday/ I believe like Martin Luther King had a dream/ that we’d all be together and not separate.”

The ninth track has a smooth R&B feel. “When it comes to rap I’m way past the average cat/ dominate the paint like half a Shaq.”

The 10th track sends a shout out to the hometown. “Murder the beats and we still delivering the peace/ but I ain’t from the ATL I’m from the TAC.”

The 11th track makes a reference to the malt liquor ban on Hilltop. “When my throat’s dry the Olde English is cold and nice/ but I’m Hilltop vicinity so I gotta get Ice House, Milwaukee’s Best or Keystone Light for my mouth.”

The keyboards and bass line on the 14th track create a funky sound.

The 19th song stands out from the rest of the material, as Darxiide shows its sensitive side. It has a piano line and one of the members sings on the chorus. “Yeah, if love is ever here in my room/ if the world were to fall apart and if fiction were to win/ I wouldn’t change a thing now that you’re here.”

The 23rd and final track has a synthesizer part that creates a dramatic mood. “Sliding to spot it ‘cuz I’m butter smooth/ I’m blown like my neon orange Nike shoes/ stunting like Supa Dave trying to get supa paid/ hot like a space heater on a cold day.”

The CD would be better with proper packaging, such as song titles and some information about the band, but the music on the disc shows these young rappers have much potential.

Darxiide plays Viaduct on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. and 54th Street Bar and Grill on Feb. 13 at 8 p.m.

"Only a couple things mistranlated, He quoted our incubus sample in one song for instance."
