Damn Strikeforce is coming up, Dan never really made an impact in UFC although he had that great knockout against Bisping. Him losing to Rampage and Anderson Silva right when he came to UFC seemed like it took away all that he accomplished in Pride

Dan Henderson expects to re-sign with UFC, could meet Nate Marquardt next

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Oct 19, 2009 at 12:50 pm ET
Following his UFC 100 knockout victory over Michael Bisping, Dan Henderson found himself in a rare spot for fighters: coming off a UFC win without any contracted fights left.

While UFC officials may have thought a new deal easily could be reached, the two sides apparently have very different opinions regarding what the 39-year-old fighter's services are worth.

But Henderson (25-7 MMA, 5-2 UFC), who earned a base pay of $250,000 ($150,00 of which was a win bonus) for the Bisping win, recently told HDNet's "Inside MMA" that he won't be heading to a rival organization.

"I don't plan on fighting anywhere else," said Henderson, who reportedly met with Strikeforce officials. "It never even entered my mind that I'd be anywhere else. It's just something myself, Dana (White) and the other guys over there at the UFC, we need to sit down and figure it out for my next fight."

Before and after Henderson's win over Bisping in July, White said the former PRIDE champion would likely be the next to challenge for Anderson Silva's middleweight belt. But Silva, who defeated Henderson via second-round submission in March 2008, and his camp have expressed disinterest in a rematch. Silva, meanwhile, is expected to fight Vitor Belfort at UFC 108 in January.

Henderson hinted a fight with Nate Marquardt, a fellow top contender who's also suffered a previous loss to Silva, could be next.

"It doesn't look like it'll be him," Henderson said of Silva. "But my guess is my next two fights will be Marquardt and Anderson Silva. It doesn't matter to me which order they're in."

Dana White: Dan Henderson Is Asking for An 'Obscene' Amount of Money

Negotiations between the UFC and Dan Henderson are more than stalled, they are apparently "done."

"You never know what's going to happen, we'll see what happens in time," UFC president Dana White told Raw Vegas on Saturday. "But as of right now, yeah, negotiations are done."

White says he holds no ill will towards the Team Quest fighter but simply could not reach a new agreement with Henderson, whose contract with the organization expired with his win over Michael Bisping at UFC 100 in July.

"I have a great relationship with him but he was looking for an obscene amount of money," White said.

At 39 years of age, and at the height of his popularity for the wild knockout over Bisping, Henderson is probably looking at his last big lucrative contract. The former PRIDE double champion could continue serving as a contender in the UFC's middleweight and light heavyweight divisions or turn his drawing power towards benefiting Strikeforce and its deal with CBS.

Friday's Yahoo! Sports report said that Henderson landing with Strikeforce was imminent, but FanHouse learned from Henderson's camp that any talks between the two have been introductory.

The questions now is if this is all a tactic for White to go public with the failed negotiations to encourage Henderson to lower his price, and if not, is Strikeforce willing to sign Henderson under his allegedly high asking price.

White suggests, as a person in his position would, that Strikeforce would be overpaying if it were to sign Henderson.

"If they can afford to sign Dan Henderson, and I couldn't, what's that tell you?" White asked.

why would he want to this when he just had the KO over bisping that got his name ranked to fight silva again after belfort?

put it like this; if a fighter loses in the UFC, their name is still a household name. but if they lose in a different organization, their name loses alot of value. and, 1 win in the UFC has twice the value of a win in another organization.

They replayed the Hendo vs Spider fight last night on Spike, and I have to say that Dan was winning almost every second of that fight up until he got caught with the knee. Spider's got a chin though, because Dan caught him with that same overhand right that he decapitated Bisping with, and he wasn't wobbled or anything.

I'd like to see that rematch. I think that if Dan was more careful during the scrambles and didn't try to swing for the fences, he would've gotten a hold of Anderson again, and that's where he was controlling the fight.
