PARK SLOPE, N.Y. (WPIX) - While some prefer to steal candy from babies, others - specifically in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn - have opted to steal coats from small dogs.
According to Donna McPherson, her 10-year-old Westie "Lexie," was left to fend for herself in the bitter cold after an insensitive mugger literally snatched the coat off the back of the pint-sized pooch.
McPherson said she tied Lexie to a pole right outside Ace Supermarket on 7th Avenue in Park Slope, and left her unattended for less than 2 minutes so she could run in and get some milk.
"I heard a funny bark, I turned around and saw nothing," McPherson told PIX News. "Lexie was just there looking at me."
"I paid for the milk, came out and saw that someone took his coat."
At the time, Lexie was donning a wool green coat priced at $25, McPherson said.
"I just looked at Lexie and asked 'Where is your coat?' as if he was going to tell me," she said. "I mean, who would take a coat off a dog? It's ludicrous!"
The dog owner said that she felt so bad about the apparent robbery that she bought him two new coats.
Employees at Ace Supermarket were shocked about the doggie mugging, and insist the neighborhood is typically safe for mutts and humans alike.
Police still have no leads as to who was behind the puppy robbery.
