Dude is the biggest bargin in the world - he's gonna break the bank next year

Cabrera agrees at $472,000

March 2, 2006

MIAMI (AP) -- Florida Marlins slugger Miguel Cabrera agreed Thursday to a one-year contract that will pay him $472,000 in the majors, meaning he'll likely be one of baseball's best bargains again this season.

Cabrera batted .323 with 33 home runs and 116 RBIs in his third major league season last year. He'll be eligible for arbitration for the first time after this season.

"I'm happy," Cabrera said. "You have to put up your numbers every year and see what happens. My time is coming, you know?"

His contract calls for a $296,000 salary if he's in the minors.

Marlins right-hander Sergio Mitre agreed to a contract that pays him $330,000 in the majors and $200,337 in the minors. The Marlins renewed the contract of left-hander Jason Vargas, 5-5 as a rookie last year, for the $327,000 minimum in the majors and $155,505 in the minors.

Every player on Florida's 40-man roster is under contract.

you got to put the years in before you can get big money.

Gagne made $300,000 and $600,000 the years that he had the 84 game closing streak

maybe bammer can help???

i thought you had to have at least 6 years Major League Experience to be eligible for arbitration????? anything prior to that you are basically OWNED by the club

I thought it was 6 years for free agency and 3 full years for arbitration. I could be wrong though.

so youre saying the marlins couldnt have broke the bank and tried to tie him up to a long term contract - the best they could have done is a one year contract. Somehow i don't think this is the case, i could be wrong.

^^^This is just a guess, but maybe if they wanted to get a longer deal theyd have to pay more, and he might be up for arbitration after this year anyway....but then again its the marlins. who knows what theyre doing.

and even once he get arbitration they will only give him about 5 mil for the first year and then the second year of arbitration they will probly give him 8-10 mil.

i am pretty sure they could have give him more if they wanted to. to i cant see any1 in their right mind giving away a few million out of the goodness of their hearts when they didnt have to.

plus i am pretty sure, although not positive that as a 16 year old free agent he had to have gotten a pretty good signing bonus

I seen this in the paper to,and thought "what in the fuck?".I thought it was another Cabrerra.I'm not sure how it works, but he has enough good years in the Show.Pujols has just a little more experience, and he's making 11 mill this year.I'm not comparing there production, but you would think he's worth atleast 6 mill. There's gotta be a 3 year rule of some sort,I'll look into it.
