You should be able to run both, I am pretty sure they would be in separate folders, inside Steinberg in Program Files, you will have Cubase SX2 and Cubase SX3 folders. The only problem I can think of is the Dongle/Syncrosoft. May have interference?

But dude, honestly, SX3 is a monster. It's the best Cubase version bar none so I'm sure you won't miss SX 2.

Peace.

What version of SX 3 is it? Version 3.1.1.944 has a bug with the metronome. According to magesythey recommend using version 3.0.2.623

The newer version 3.1.1.944 has issues with the Metronome not working and software not authorizing.

In reply to the message,

I'm a bit confused, are you trying to disable the Dongle? You can probably do this by going to Start>Run>Msconfig and then disable it in your Startup Processes.

But if your going to disable something in your Startup Process I recommend going here:

Start>Run>Services.msc

And find your SYncrosoft/Dongle in the big list, double click it, and disable it.

Note, this way, your Dongle software will not run, ever, so, you have to be careful disabling it at Startup. You will need to eventually enable it again.

Are you using pirated versions? H2O Dongle? Or are you using legitimate versions?

What exactly is the dongle doing? Is Cubase SX 3 not even running because of it, or it won't even install? I don't understand.

Honestly, if you back up your Data from Cubase SX 2, and then clear Cubase SX 2 off of your computer including the Dongle/Software. Restart and perform a clean install of Cubase SX 3, I don't see the big deal! If you don't end up loving SX 3 (Which you will!) then you can just go back to SX 2 without any difficulties.

If your having major difficulties I say back up your Tracks/Data from SX 2, uninstall everything, and re-install Cubase SX 3. Bring back in your SX 2 Data, and your ready to go.

If your using a legitimate version I am not sure if you need a new license/key for your dongle to run Cubase SX 3 or what, you really have to take that up with Steinberg support.

ok cool....Stupid question, but it won't touch the VSTs that I have installed in the Steinberg folder right?
Nah, you can have multiple applications accessing the same vst folder. Only problem would be with the new SX3 plugins that don't work in SX2. If you uninstall SX3, only the SX3 plugins will be removed, no third-party plugins will be affected.

No dude, your third party plug-ins will only be removed if you remove them manually. If you perform an uninstall of SX 2, it will leave all of your Project Data in the Steinberg folder for you to sort through manually, the uninstall will only remove what it originally installed! Any Tracks, Sessions Files, Plug-ins, will remain.

I personally keep my VST-Plugins folder in C:\Program Files and then I route whichever DAW I am using to search for the plug-ins at that location. That way I don't have to worry about missing plug-ins.

And like Sleepy said, and I mentioned, just back up all of your current SX 2 Projects, and completely remove SX 2 and the Dongle.

Restart.

Perform a clean install of SX 3, and bring back in your SX 2 Projects & Data, they should work fine with SX 3! Plug-ins, again, they will not be affected, just make sure your plug-in folders are organized.

If you have to do the above, it's not a big deal! Don't be afraid of uninstalling SX 2 and it's Dongle. If it needs to be done to properly run SX 3, then it needs to be done, just protect your old projects from SX 2 and make sure your plug-ins are organized.

You do not need to re-install any plug-ins or instruments when you install a new DAW. If you have VSTi's like Hypersonic 2, or anything by Steinberg that use a Dongle, you may need to re-install those if they don't open in your new upgraded version of SX, but other than that, keep your plug-ins where they are, and if you need to move the old plug-in folder to your new SX 3 directory, do so.
