There are a few things you need first! It's easy but you gotta get over a few learning curves first. The first thing you need is to go to www.garagegames.com read up on the Torque Game Engine and Torque Game Builder. If you want a 3D World type game learn the Torque Game Engine. The Torque Game Builder will get you a game in the 2D platform like side scrolling games ... Mario Bros. Defender etc. But with a twist. You can include particle effects and a whole gang of other things that you are not used to seeing a 2D platform. You can also make boardgames with the 2D version and it's best for learning what Torque can do. There are also some books I recommend.

1. 3D Game Programming All In One (2nd Edition)by Ken Finney. You can also find him in the forums @ www.garagegames.com . Make sure it's the 2nd Edition the first has a lot of errors in it . This book starts you off assuming you know absolutely NOTHING about game programming.

2. Advanced 3D Game Programming All in One . This one continues where the first book left off

3. The Game Programmer's Guide to Torque.

This is the Official Guide to Torque , but the first two books are more NOOB friendly.

They all come with disks with demos of Torque and all the things you need to make a game. By the time you finish 1 and 2 you will have completed a game or two.

Then of course you want to download XNA. do a Google on it and you should find yourself at the Microsoft site. But to use XNA and compile a game you need to download some additional stuff. Visual Studio 2005 Express is free for a few more months and also Visual C# Express , which is also free for a few more months. Go here.

You will find everything you need to get your PC ready to make a game for the 360 or the computer. I have been following and studying this for a while now, and am willing to help anyone who wants to learn.

Yeah, you can get the Personal Learning Edition of Maya for free and it's more than enough for what you want to do.
You will need the DTS exporter for Maya to get your models into Torque. is the tricky part. but once you get the export out of Maya done you'll be good to go. Heres a tutorial frog the Garagegames site.

and here's a DTS exporter, there may be newer or other versions out there. Just do a Google on "Maya DTS exporter" if this one doesn't do the trick

I'm bout to get back into this and the music heavy this coming year. So just holler if you need some help. You should peep the books I mentioned above. Very good investments.
