Anybody who follows soundscan sales or billboard charts, can obviously see that the popularity of hip hop is declining. The music itself is getting worse, period. At least what's 'hot' is getting worse. There were days when I could actually fuck with the radio... now mostly, I just stick with the jazz station because I get sick and tired of trying to find one good song between the 3 urban and 3 rock stations programmed into my car radio (yeah mfkr, I can't afford a CD player. Go ahead, say somethin about it and gimme a reason to pull yours). These days, even as far as artists I've been following and still love go, I'm not as excited for their upcoming releases as I used to be.

One might make the argument that maybe Im 'growing out of hip hop', or maybe I dont like it as much as I used to. Well the fact of the matter is, hip hop is just a much a part of me as... um eating pussy I guess. And let me tell you, I love to eat pussy. I dont eat all pussy though, only good pussy. Just like I only listen to good hip-hop. Trust that I have good taste in both pussy and hip-hop. End of story, no arguing the two previously aformentioned FACTS.

The point Im trying to make is there is less and less good rap records being released these days. It's sad but true. I've seen the same thing happen with the punk rock genre. The moment it got too popular and everybody found the secret fucking cave, the damn cave got too crowded and the fresh cave party turned into a damn over-priced club in a cave that you gotta knock shoulders to get out of. Weird anology I know, but ya'll can feel what Im saying right?

In any case, Im stating it officially and for the record. I've seen plenty of ya'll saying it for months, but this is me on the record for whoever wants to read it.

Apparently though, the new thing is Country Muzak.

My brother, who has been into rap for just as long as I have now listens to mostly all country music. It bothers the living fuck out of me, but he digs it and thats something I just have to live with. He tells me "all the new rap now a days fuckin sucks..." which is true. It doesn't justify him listening to songs about 'wanting to check you for ticks', but I think some of the guys he met in the Air Force had some influence on that (my brother's kind of a 'follow the leader' type guy, feels safer jumping a bandwagon rather than driving his own, ya feel me?). Be that as it may, my brother actually does have good taste in hip-hop music. On my end of the spectrum, I've been listening to some more production artists (i.e. J Dilla, Madlib, Peanut Butter Wolf, and DJ DangerMouse, ect.) that have more to do with the beats and less to do with the game spitting.

But this has led me to consider... now that Country seems to be becoming more popular by the minute (I'll keep it real, I heard about 2-3 Rascall Flatts songs I can vibe with), is the next generation of 50 Cent, Eminem, G-Unit, Nike wearing suburban white kids all going to trade that shit in for a pair of boots, wrangler jeans and a cowboy hat come 5 years from now?

Real talk, I dont have as much 'street gear' as I used to because basically my shit dont look fresh as it once did, I dont have the money for more, and Im 20 years old and need to put on a professional appearance in most settings I encounter. People just dont take you seriously on an academic or professional level wearing that throwback and fitted cap with your dickies. Plain and simple. On top of that, I've found a button down dress shirt with a nice pair of jeans/khakis can last longer and actually appeals to ALL women (that's a whole nother ball game though). Though I have my red dickies and Isaiah Thomas jersey I'll rock on occasion coordinated with pistons headband and forces to match, it's not something I'd wear to a job interview or when Im going out to an upper class restaurant/club. I kind of see that as 'just growing up' though. Not that Im grown out of what I love, it's more of the fact you have to appeal to the public if you want to get anywhere professionally.

Alright, Im done fuckin rambling. My main point is all them boys wearing their New Era hats broke off to the side and all white Air Force 1's that they buy 5 pairs at a time are highly likely to be wearing flanel shirts tucked into wrangler jeans with cowbody hats and fucky looking boots with pointed toes.

Funny, right?

Two questions.

One: Did you write all of that that or copy/paste?

Two: If you did right that, you actually like some Rascal Flatts songs? My ex girl a few years ago listened to them. It made me want to commit random acts of violence.

The closest I'll come to listening to Country is Johnny Cash and I only like his more Folk/Blues work, not his straight up Country stuff.

I swear Country, Reggaton, and Techno (house, trance, etc) are the only genres of music off the top of my head that I can say I've never heard one song that I have liked from any of the three given genres.

I feel you, man. like, pretty much completely.
though, I hate most country songs, because they all sound the same.

I can dig the older stuff, from the early 1900's to the 70's. when it was more original. but I had a girl that loved country, and it was mostly horrible.

I can also see how I've grown up...now, it could be from the major amounts of marijuana that I've inhaled over the past few years...or the fact that gangsta rap and bounce music is trendy and lame now. I've also gradually changed the way I dress to clothes that actually fit and make me look decent.

but I've also found myself digging deep underground for great production. I've been jamming to the Stones Throw (which is a great label, and I bow to the westcoast for it!) for a while now, and the Def Jux, Rhymesayers, etc.

anyways, this is turning into a scattered reply of small paragraphs...and it's keeping me from doing work..but, In closing...I feel where you're coming from.

Country music is lame and about as original as most rap is these days, but no one in rap has ever sold 115 million records like Garth Brooks. Country has always sold and always will.

You got a lot of good points homie. I feel the exact same way. Hip Hop as a CULTURE is dying away.

The music aspect can be blamed on no one else but the artists and the record labels themselves. Sure there is bootlegging and MTV not playing videos and illegal downloading and other things, but artists who can really put it down like Kayne West show that you can still go platinum and you can still sell records. The music on the radio is just to formulaic. They all have the same Southern Sound and same drawn out whiney hook and it just doesn't sit well with most people. I was shocked when I saw Ya Boy's video and heard the song "Holla At Ya Boy." This guy is one of my favorite new MCs and the beat and hook replicated a typical Southern song. The lyrics were on point except for the verse about "I got killas in ___ (throw in random city to try and sell units." That really dissapointed me cause I enjoy Quinn and Ya Boy's music so much but now he's gonna flop because his single is so generic.

But that's just one example and I think another big example is the regionalization of the music. It once was good for originality and creating different sounds but now its evolved into new rappers copying the styles and slang of everything else that region has. It has limited rappers content to whatever their city or small region is. If you check BART and listen to the nobodys myspace or downloads they are all still on "stupid dumb hyphy" and its soo repetitive and redundant it just sounds stupid as fuck.

I am in a similar situation with you where part of my disinterest with Hip Hop has to do with my personal life. I am from San Francisco and I jumped off the hyphy bandwagon about a year ago. It is funny as fuck how loud Hip Hop clothing has got. All the bubbly designs and pinks and yellows and stupid sayings on the front of shirts, airbrushing has gotten kind of played out, BAPES is like the worst thing to happen to Hip Hop. On the weekends I wear solid T-shirts or a nice button down and I peel hoes like crazy while I watch these "hyphy" kids sit in the parking lots on Broadway and act like they are ballers and drug dealers and they don't peel shit. Girls laugh at them in their dumbass hoodies wearing oversized sunglasses at 2 in the morning. I also noticed people like that try to act way to hard. I'm a pretty good judge of character and when I get a mean mug from these kids who have never gotten their asses kicked I just laugh my ass off and move on. They might talk a little smack but they feel hella embarrased.

Despite the downhill trend in the music and my disconnect with the clothes and attitude I find there are still some Gems in Hip Hop. NAS CONTINUES to make GREAT HIP HOP! I am actually excited for his next release. Kayne is a cocky mutha fucka but he makes good music too. In the Bay San Quinn still makes classic music and we'll see what Ya Boy and some of his Protege's from Fully Loaded have to offer. There is an artist named Conceit from the 'Sco who is really opening eyes. The Living Legends, Murs, Grouch, Atmosphere, Zion I, Mistah F.A.B. are all keeping their music treal. I hope its a sign that Hip Hop can live through what's going on right now and ressurect itself in a few years.

Hip Hop's not dying it's just that the stuff being talked about isn't something to boast or be proud about.

Not everyone can relate to hip hop, we're not all drug dealers and pimps. Shits all fantasy based typed Scarface movie like drama. All the rappers are some mighty fine actors IMO. You dumb the lyrics down you numb the crowd and society is just a reflection of that. That's why you have kids acting stupid and following trends.

The message needs to change

Yeah...newsflash:

Country fans have, and always will buy records.

I proly shouldn't go here, but I'm a go out on a limb and say that a much larger part of country's fans are more ethical and moral...haha.

I remember my mom said she liked some country song on TV and I told her I'd download it for her. She wanted nothing to do with it...she said she'd just go buy the CD or get it off ITunes.

Go figure.

the truth of the matter is country always sold a shit load of records cuz they do a lot of wal mart promo tours. i think the culture is bigger than hip hop if you ask me. there's nothin wrong in saying that either cuz hip hop has been and will always be the underdog.

Im a music person, and yeah I heard 2 or 3 Rascall Flatts songs I could vibe with like I said. Now if I need to straight murder, cut up and eat one of your family members to let you know I dont fuck around, I'd be happy to do that while you tied to a chair letting you watch while I play Rascall Flatts in the background.

Im just playin around man. I said that shit to somebody a few weeks ago though... I liked some R&B song and one of my boys was like "oh, what are you some kind of fag now?" and Im like "Nah man. But if you need me to prove Im not gay by fucking your girlfriend on film while playing (said song) in the background to prove to you I still like women, we can take care of that"

I feel you on Johnny Cash though. Im a big Johnny Cash fan, have been for a couple years now... I think 02 or 03 I got into his shit. Other than that, I can't fuck with country at all.

Country music has always been a big player in record sales, but now a days hip hop rarely touches their sales like it used to. There's a lot of factors contributing to this, but I just kind of used the comparison to country as a focal point to the decline of hip-hop's popularity.

and before I leave, I'd just like to re-iterate the concept of nice jeans and a clean button down... trust me, I've pulled white, black, latina, and indian girls in them type of clothes. You really do limit your options in women when you're always trying to be G'd up from the feet up.

It's a cultural thing. Most people that like country don't download music period so they buy the records. Not to mention Rap & Hip Hop is way over saturated. Everyone is a rapper and puttin out music now a days so that takes away from some bigger name artist sales and puts it in some unknown underground sales. . .
