Where do I go to look up a name for a company or label so I can verify that the name is not being used? I want to copyright my shit and make it official.

Also can someone give me more info on publishing, I hear ASCAP and BMI are the best to go through. What are the advantages to registering?

ASCAP and BMI are very simple to understand. If you register with them, you make money...but there is a catch. You either have to start your own publishing company as well as become a published artist, or get under somebody else's publishing company....cause in order to have a song published, there must be a publishing company behind you!! If you get all that done, everytime somebody licenses your music, you get paid about $0.07....if you are under a different publishing company, say SUGE PUBLISHING for example, you will get paid about 3 1/2 cents everytime your shit is played. If you're gettin a shitload of radio play across the country, you will be makin some serious bread on the side....
