(06-22) 12:15 PDT RENO -- The Reno pawn-shop owner suspected of fatally stabbing his wife and shooting a judge in a sniper attack failed to surrender today at an agreed meeting place in Mexico, authorities said.
Darren Roy Mack, 45, was supposed to have shown up at a previously arranged location in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, at 8:30 a.m., Reno Police Chief Mike Poehlman said at a news conference.
Mack had contacted Washoe County District Attorney Dick Gammick on Monday and offered to surrender, the prosecutor said.
Authorities have received tips about sightings of Mack throughout Mexico, including Cabo San Lucas, Azatlan, Puerto Vallarta and La Paz, but nothing has been confirmed, Poehlman said.
"We've never been able to accurately pinpoint him," Gammick said.
Mack is being sought on a state arrest warrant charging him with murder with the use of a deadly weapon in the killing of his wife, Charla Mack, whose body was found June 12 lying face down in a pool of blood in a Reno home where he had been living, according to a police affidavit.
Mack also is wanted for questioning in the shooting of Reno Family Court Judge Chuck Weller, who was shot through a window as he was in his chambers, police said. Weller, who had been handling Mack's divorce case, has been released from a hospital.
The FBI is seeking Mack on a federal warrant accusing him of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
In a statement today, Weller commended law-enforcement officials for their work and said he hoped there would be a "peaceful conclusion" in the search for Mack.
"It is our greatest hope that no further bloodshed occur in this matter," Weller said. "The Mack family, and in particular Darren Mack's mother and children, along with the family members of Charla Mack, have suffered enough loss and grief in this tragic episode."
Reno police have described Mack as "a man with vast resources, travel experience and abilities. The search for Darren Mack is not limited to local, state, or national boundaries."
Court records said Mack killed his wife, who had suffered stab wounds to her chest and neck, with "premeditation and deliberation." Police found an empty sheath for a dagger on the floor of the master bedroom closet, the records said.
The spotlight in the search for Mack turned briefly to the Contra Costa County town of Moraga last week when Mack's cousin, Jeff Donner, revealed that the suspect had called him and said, "if anything happens to me, don't forget your promise -- put out to the press the word on Judge Weller. The rest of the world has to know just how oppressive he is."
Mack is described as Caucasian with brown hair and brown eyes, 5-foot-11 and 190 to 220 pounds. Mack is a bodybuilder and a hunter and has access to "all types of weapons," according to the FBI.
There is a $2,500 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction. Call Reno police at (775) 334-2188 or the Secret Witness program at (775) 322-4900.
