Whenever you delete something from your hard drive it's gone but technically it's still there. In other words if you delete a file most people won't be able to see it. BUT if for some reason the FBI confiscated your computer they would be able to read (some if not all) the deleted files. There are programs that will completely remove shit from the hard drive so that no information is left. Though unless you have something really big that you have to hide, a simple delete is enough.

In some fashion, yes.

The easiest (though not the most thorough) way to cover your tracks is to (in IE) click on Tools, Internet Options, Delete Files, check "Delete all offline content", and then click Ok. Once that finishes you still be looking at the Internet Options window. Push Clear History too while you're there, hit ok when prompted. After you return again to the Internet Options window, hit Ok, and your done.

Other than that, clear out your Temp and Cookies folders if you really did something bad.

thanks for confusing me... but what would cause my computer to stall and basically kick me off everything but I'm still connected to the net, like I'll get kicked off AIM and stuff and can't load a web page and get back on AIM without disconnecting first?

If you are using a Dial-Up ISP then it could be a problem on their side or a problem with your phone line.

I doubt it's someone calling or else the phone would ring after you get knocced off. As a test though you could disable call waiting while you are on line. Most ISPs have that option. It should say something in the settings like "Dial *70 to disable call waiting" or something like that. Try that and see if anything changes. If not I'd say call the ISP help desk. They are usually annoying and often very stupid (help desk people that is) but they might be able to help you.
