Plugged in the desk top. Pushed the power button. There was a pop sound and a big whiff of smoke. Computer no longer powers on.

What needs to be replaced? Motherboard, power supply?

It's your motherboard, try and take the RAM out and plug it in and see if the motherboard will beep. If it doesn't then 100% it's Mobo.

Did a smell of sulfer came out your computer? If so it might as well be your CPU or your memory.

If you have acces to another computer and your a little handy dandy I would ripp the power supply out of one and test it in yours (you can do this by placing them next to eachother and put the cables from the other one into yours, you don't need to screw it out and in yours again just to test it).

Which also can be helpfull sometimes is try another wallsocket... sounds strange but that worked for me on serveral occasions....

I'd guess it's the power supply as well. I've blown out 2 or 3 at work when I forgot to change the switch on the back for 220V.

Before getting a new PSU, open the case up and look for burn marks. Also smell around and see what area smells the most like burnt computer.
