see what you need to do is go down to the beach and get yourself some sand

half fill a bucket with some sand and bury the 1 GB memory stick inside it

remove the 512 mb stick from the computer and press it into a block of wax to form a shape mold

into this mold, pour some more sand in there and then heat it in the oven until the sand melts and joins together

remove it from the oven and you will have some sand in the shape of a 512 memory stick

put this sand made memory stick into the computer where the 512 stick originally was

next, remove the 1GB stick from the sand bucket, then take the sand bucket and leave it outside your neighbours door with a note saying 'i don't want this anymore'

put the 1 GB stick back into the computer and apply some paint thinner to it using a small paint brush

your computer should now work properly

hope this helps

That doesn't matter usually because it's faster and it will just downclock to pc4200.

Please tell me you are not trying to use the new 1gb stick plus a 512mb...
Yup......The above post is correct. The memory you purchased should be good. The problem you are having is trying to replace only "ONE" of the memory sticks instead of "BOTH" sticks. You can't have a 512 and a 1G work in unison. Both sticks have to be the same size when paired. If you had two 512M sticks before you attempt an upgrade then you have 1G of RAM total. You need to replace both so that you have two 1G sticks for a total of 2G of ram. You can't have one 512 and one 1G stick for a total of one and a half GIG's of RAM. Get it?

Actually you can have two different mb sticks of RAM. It might not work well but it can work they do however have to be the same speed.
Well your right & wrong.....I guess I should have been more specific. Most "newer" PC's can have any combination of memory (DIMMS), but "older" PC's require inline memory to be the same. I'm assuming that if he is looking @ 512M of memory, his PC is older. This seems to me to be the most obvious cause of the problem.

@ X-LOC: What kind of PC do you have?
