ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A 52-year-old Greeley, Colorado resident was being held by police in Pakistan Tuesday after traveling to the region to hunt for Osama bin Laden by himself, authorities said.
Gary Brooks Faulkner was caught carrying a pistol, a sword, night-vision equipment, Christian religious books and a small amount of hashish, said Mumtaz Ahmed, a police chief in the area. He was detained as he was walking from Pakistan toward the border into Nuristan province in Afghanistan, Ahmed said.
"My brother is not crazy. He is highly intelligent and loves his country and he has not forgotten what Osama has done to this country," Scott Faulkner, his brother, told FOX31 on Tuesday. "He had a plan in his mind. He knew where Osama was geographically."
Scott Faulkner said he thought he would never see his brother again because of the danger of his mission -and the quality of his health. Gary Faulkner is suffering from late-stage kidney disease and received dialysis in Pakistan earlier this month.
Faulkner told police that he had been looking for bin Laden since al Qaeda's September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington D.C. and had traveled to the area five times before, Ahmed said.
Gary Faulkner -who is originally from California- moved to Colorado in 1968, his brother said. He was working as an independent contractor.
"He felt that the U.S. Government wasn't doing enough to bring this man to justice," Scott Faulkner said. "He's like a bulldog and when he got this idea to go after Osama, he's not going to let it go."
U.S. Embassy Spokesman Richard Snelsire did not confirm that Faulkner had been detained but said that the consulate in Peshawar did receive notification of the detention of an American citizen.
"We're hoping to get consular access to the individual," Snelsire said.
Faulkner told police that he had no intention of killing bin Laden, Ahmed said. But police believed he was trying to kill bin Laden because of the weapons he was carrying.
Court records show Gary Faulkner has a lengthy criminal record that includes burglary and larceny convictions in California from the 1980s. He also served time in the Denver County Jail in 1996 on a domestic violence conviction. In 2006, Faulkner was arrested on a misdemeanor charge in Greeley.
"As an American, he's doing something we would all wish to do," his brother said. "If we saw Osama walking down the sidewalk, I'd probably put a bullet in his head."
