The second amendment was installed because you were fighting the British and relying on militia's to protect yourself from the English as you didn't have an organized army. That's no longer the case obviously.

On another note, does anyone ever wonder how Americans lost their foreign accents? I mean, when settlers came over here...they were British/french/spanish...and when they brought their wives over here and made babies...they were still British/french/spanish. So how on earth did the accent disappear over time? Especially since many settlements were exclusively British, or french, etc. The only other people here were natives.

the Boston area accent seems to be the closest to Britain. and really only some words.

I read a few years back that what we know as an American accent is actually how the average British person talked back then. The current British accent was used by the wealthy and elites to set themselves apart from the commoners, but over time spread to the middle class who wanted to act elite, then down to the common folks, and just became common place.

Actually in the last few months, there have been 2 or 3 instances in Washington alone where an armed civilian has stopped an attack in progress with a firearm.

I'm not talking about those little dinky propane ones I'm talking about napalm and other types of fuel based flamethrowers used in the military.

I'm sure it depends on the state though but specifically what I was reading is that you have to go through a lot of shit. Even Mythbusters had legal problems when creating a military style flamethrower:

What is practical?

I don't think it's very practical for civilians to have AR-15s or other types of assault rifles. They aren't necessary for sport, hunting and your typical self defense there are plenty of rifles and hand guns that serve that purpose very well. Don't see how military weapons are appropriate.

What is the difference between what you are calling a "assault rifle" and "ranch rifles" that are common place on farms all across America?

Almost no civilians have military weapons btw, they generally cost well into the 5 figures and require special tax stamps and permitting.

Also many handguns can carry 30+ rounds of ammunition and fire as quickly as AR-15s.
