LOS ANGELES -- A deal has been reached in the assault case against R & B singer Chris Brown, according to the judge.
Brown agreed to plead guilty to a felony and receive a sentence of six months jail or community labor -- such as graffiti removal or trash pick up -- and five years supervised probation. He will undergo domestic violence counseling program. The other count -- criminal threats -- will be dismissed at his Aug. 5 sentencing.
Judge Patricia Schnegg said he will be allowed to complete the program, community service and probation in his native Virginia, but is to be treated there like any other offender. He'll have to return to California for updates every three months.
The announcement came as the 20-year-old entertainer was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on one felony count each of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and criminal threats.
Brown is accused of assaulting and threatening his then-girlfriend, pop star Rihanna, after a pre-Grammy Awards party early Feb. 8.
Police say the alleged assault took place in rented Lamborghini during an argument in a Hancock Park neighborhood after a pre-Grammy Awards party in February.
An attorney for Rihanna has said the Barbados-born singer would have testifed if required, but prefered that the case be resolved before a trial.
After Chris Brown left with his entourage, Rihanna was brought into the courtroom and informed of the stay-away order by the judge. "Thank you," she told the judge and then left through a back door of the courtroom.
