Wilson took the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.
Cedrick Wilson was named the NFC's Special Teams Player of the Week for his play in the 49ers third consecutive home win, a 30-10 triumph over the NFC West-rival St. Louis Rams.
On the game’s opening kickoff, Wilson provided San Francisco an immediate advantage, returning the kick 95 yards for a touchdown to give the 49ers a 7-0 lead they would never relinquish.
“I know it has been a while since we started off with a kickoff return touchdown,” Wilson said. “The guys gave me time and a big hole to run through. The coaches told me all week, ‘When you see a hole Cedrick, hit it and don’t let the kicker tackle you.’ And in the end, that’s what happened.”
The kickoff return touchdown was the first by a 49er since Terry Kirby took one back 101 yards in a 29-17 win over the Carolina Panthers on November 16, 1997. Wilson’s return was also the first time a 49er returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown since December 1, 1985 when Carl Monroe scored on a 95-yarder in a 35-8 win over Washington.
In his third season from Tennessee, this is Wilson’s first Player of the Week Award.
