i just had to basically get a new comp cuz mine crashed (new fan, motherboard, hard drive... i think that was all) anyways the burner i have i just got off a buddy and its really old. like, i install the software and it says it has to search on the internet for the program, but never finds anything. i think its just too old and not supported anymore or something. but if i just hook it up, does the computer detect that it has another drive installed or do i need that disk that came with it to work?

also, what is a good burner program.... like that i could download somewhere

You dont need a disk to hook up a burner. As long as the jumper(s) on the back of the drive are set right. so if you had another cd drive in there already you would want to set the burner to SLAVE but if its the only cd drive then set the jumper(s) to MASTER and hook up the IDE cable and POWER CABLE and the computer should detect it. As far as a cd burning software. I use NERO BURNING ROM. drag and drop from left hand screen to right hand screen then hit burn and bam your done.

^^most programs you can double click the current song or songs you want to get rid of the 2second skip in the current compilation window your about to burn and a menu screen will pop up. I use nero so this is how i do it. It comes up with track properties and has a option that saw PAUSE which is default too two. change it to 0 and your set.

you might need to install a Driver for the burner. find out the make/model of the burner and search for a Driver for it. try http://www.driverguide.com they have almost every driver for every peripheral. other than that, make sure everything is connected correctly (IE the slave/master jumper and power supply connection as well as IDE cable connection). if everything is connected correctly, the computer will recognize the new drive, but it may not realize it's a burner. that's why you might need it's driver. as for burning software, i recommend Nero Burning Rom. supposedly, Nero is the best out there, but i just use the HP software my burner came with.
