ANGELS CAMP, Calif. (AP) ― Emergency officials say three people have been severely injured in the collapse of a carnival ride at a fairgrounds.
Dennis Townsend, a chief with the California state fire department, told The Associated Press another 14 fairgoers received lesser injuries.
He says they were injured when a type of swing ride collapsed shortly after 6 p.m. Friday. The ride has arms that fling out as they spin around an axis.
Susan Leininger, a supervisor at Mark Twain Hospital in San Andreas, says the hospital has been alerted that it will receive patients. It has not been told how many.
The Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee celebrates the Mark Twain story about a character and his frog, named Dan'l Webster.
It is located near the Gold Rush era town of Angels Camp in the Sierra Nevada foothills and bills itself as an "old-fashion county fair" with exhibits and a variety of entertainment.
The jumping frog finals are scheduled for Sunday.
