Canada won't fund missile shield: PM

Windsor Star

Wednesday, December 15, 2004

Prime Minister Paul Martin said Tuesday he does not believe the U.S. ballistic missile shield will succeed in shooting down incoming rockets, as he threw up new roadblocks to counter President George W. Bush's strong appeal for Canada to join his continental defence plan.

Canada will not put any money into building the missile shield and it will not allow Washington to station rockets on Canadian soil as the price of participation in the multibillion-dollar program, Martin told Global National in a year-end interview.

In another issue that could cause friction with Bush, Martin said Canada was prepared to accept U.S. citizens who do not want to serve in the war in Iraq.

"In terms of immigration, we are a country of immigrants and we will take immigrants from around the world. I'm not going to discriminate," said Martin, when reminded that former prime minister Pierre Trudeau opened Canada's doors to draft dodgers and deserters during the Vietnam War.

'AN ILLEGAL WAR'

When asked whether the prime minister was referring to ongoing attempts by Jeremy Hinzman, a 26-year-old U.S. deserter, to gain asylum in Canada after refusing to serve in what he calls "an illegal war," Martin spokesman Scott Reid said the prime minister "was not commenting on any individual case and certainly was not sending a signal to the immigration board."

Canada will not put any money into building the missile shield and it will not allow Washington to station rockets on Canadian soil as the price of participation in the multibillion-dollar program, Martin told Global National in a year-end interview.

no iShhh, I read an article a while back, and then saw a news special with guys who helped design the program... It has so many flaws and is such a waste of resources, they only work a fraction of the time on tests which are calculated to have the expected results (i.e. it missle A leaves point A at time A, then ballistic defense missel B interrupt the attcak, this only works part of the time, when in a real attack the time, & place of origin can not be computed into the defense system)... All the funds we exasperating into a flawed homeland security system would be better spent on intelligence efforts towards breaking down actual terroris cells...
This is simply a program to appease to the people who buy those attack-proof bunkers in butfuck indiana... and all the other "red states and counties"

I hope Canada does start accepting Iraqi war deserters, no one should be forced to fight in that unjust war.

The Missle shield thing sounds like a joke, the world is paranoid. And for reaaal I lived in Canada my whole life and ain't never seen anyone dog sledding (4 those of you who watched the vid clip).

I'm just glad that Paul Martin isn't bowing down to Bush.

Did they show the protests in ontario, on the news in the US from when Bush came to visit the PM? Even Bush made jokes about the welcome he recieved in canada... "And I want to thank the Canadian people who came out to wave, with all five fingers," ~ bush.

What is it about Canada that as a country we seem to be more to the left, I mean it ain't like we are that far away from the states, but the mind sets seem to be totally different.

I thought the Canadians were being a bit confrontational lately, good for them. How about taking Opeation Gatekeeper to the northern border now, senor Bush.

It is, but if your enlisted and they say you have to fight in this unjust war you have to fight in the war, deserters can even get the death penalty.

that's what the big deal is with Jeremy Hinzman trying to get into canada.

^^you lived in the country didn't you?

true but he should have thought about that when he volunteered. he knew he had a duty to fulfill
Maybe when he volunteered he was a different person, or perhaps he just see's this unjust war exactly for what it is.

I've been living in the GTA my whole life and I love it. If I was to leave I'd go to Australia or some place warmer. Not a chance I would go to the U.S.

Dog sledding? I saw John Stuart clown the fuck out of that dude on crossfire not too long ago. What a fag.

The only cats I know that support Bush's administration out here are the ones who don't seek out knowledge, but eat up everything that's on televison and in the newspapers. Basically they're selfish and don't give a fuck about what's going on and/or they're straight up idiots.

CLASSIC!

"We allow them to be on the same continent as we are? We allow..."
"They are lucky."
"That's very nice of you to allow Canada to be our neighbor. Y'now it's called geography. We don't really have a choice."

Yes, I lived in London, Ontario for close to 2 years (About 20 months). Have been all over Toronto.

Everyone acts like they hate Americans etc etc...but then face to face they say "But your cool, we just hate the rest of them".

It's nice to visit if your trying to get away from things, but I wouldn't choose that location to conduct business. Snow is great, people are mad nice, things are cheap...but people don't have a real sense of reality. They are too enclosed. Talking about a countires population which less than LA County alone, who rely on BCC for "real" information.

Overall, I like it better than the US. Only reason why Im not living there is the money...not enough of it.

Canadian girls are mad fine..plus they jock US guys...ha..especially if your from Cali.

Anyways, let us put our stuff in your country...
Regardless, if for some reason Canada gets invaded the US will back Canada. Its just to close to home to let it slide.
What is it you guys spend on military? Like 1 or 2 percent of the taxes? Your biker gangs can take out your own military.
