I strongly recommend that everyone invest their time in Divx. It is the video when it's in avi format. Watch them just as they are on your DVD Player.
1. The files are compressed and relatively small, usually around 700mb.
2. Quality is good.
3. You can burn multiple movies onto the same disc allowing you to toggle between movies when it loads in your DVD player.
4. Because you're burning the file as data and not changing it's state, you can easily transfer the files to and from your computer keep their original form.
What you will need is a DVD Player that will support dixv files

I payed $50 for mine and found another for $40 that a friend of mine bought. I recently just burned 6 movies onto a DVD-R. I just load them up and pick which movie I want to watch.
