JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two workers at a Jacksonville Burger King have been fired and arrested after one of them allegedly placed a hydrocodone pill on a customer's sandwich.
Woody Duclos was arrested on charges of poisoning food with intent to kill or injure a person, WJXT-TV reported. His co-worker, Bryant Jones, was also arrested after he admitted to selling the pills to Duclos, police said.
The restaurant district manager told police that Duclos was recently suspended for misconduct, and she believes, "He did this because he was disgruntled and angry at the business," according to a police report.
Ernest McHenry, who visited the Burger King located on Philips Highway near the Avenues, said he found a blue pill on his fish sandwich.
"I said, 'Wow.' I was kind of shocked at first, and I let everyone know. I said, 'Wow, look at this,'" McHenry said.
Police said the pill was the painkiller hydrocodone.
"Immediately, my attitude about food or hunger, it all disappeared," McHenry said while laughing.
McHenry said he discovered the pill when he went to put salt and pepper on his sandwich.
"It's stupid really, just dumb," McHenry said. "Just goes to show you there's nothing people won't do."
McHenry said the fast food chain's famous slogan "Have it your way" has now taken on a whole new meaning.
"I didn't ask for that," he said. "People do crazy things. It just makes you a little more cautious about everything you do."
According to police, a 21-year-old woman who went through the drive-through at the same Burger King ended up getting sick after one bite.
According to police documents, after she went back to the restaurant and called police, she had a seizure and had to be taken to a hospital.
Burger King issued a statement on Tuesday following the arrests:
"Food safety is non-negotiable at Burger King restaurants. This franchise restaurant, which is independently owned and operated, has terminated the two employees involved and is working with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on this investigation."
