Movie rental giant Blockbuster has tried, with mixed results, to cut into Netflix’s grasp of the mail-in, subscription-based rental service.

Now, though, Blockbuster is finding another way to try and entice consumers: adding video games to its Total Access subscription service.

Blockbuster hopes to launch the pilot program in the second quarter this year, so keep your eyes peeled. While the company has already been renting out video games in its stores for a while now, the selection leaves something to be desired when compared to game rental service GameFly.

Still, the big titles are always available for all console platforms, and if Blockbuster makes all those games available online and then some, the service could appeal to anyone who wants both games and movies without having to maintain two separate subscriptions.

It should be noted that Total Access subscribers will have to add a small fee to their current monthly payment, and a trade-in at an actual Blockbuster will get them half off another game rental.

The combination of movies and games looks to be an excellent move on Blockbuster’s part, though Even if the addition of video games doesn’t draw in a crowd of new subscribers, it will, at the very least, make some of the current customers happy enough to stay on with Blockbuster.
