God can and will let awful things happen to his true believers once in a while to see how faithful his children are. It's hard to tell when he is testing your trust and and faith, but he does do it. props to EDJ for the insightful comments. The way I see it is that God lets man make a choice. We can choose to do his will (good) or we can defy his will. (evil). If we didn't have this choice, we would be robots. Man prolly creates most all of the problems we have here on this earth, which is our own damn fault.... the wrong choice is always the EASY way out. but, i wonder how to explain 'natural' disasters, such as earthquakes, etc. .. In this modern age with the internet, public libraries, decent records, and such it might be possible to research and cross reference things to your hearts content. But 2,000 years ago this was simply not possible. People still thought the earth was flat dude. Any person could roll into town on their donkey and talk a good game and get the nimrods in their loincloths and new Air Moses' to bow down. Snake oil merchants have been around for a very long time.

But beyond that you're talking about researching something that is well beyond the scope of modern history. Cross reference what? The Dead Sea Scrolls? Think Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John left their Palm Pilots laying around somewhere? I won't even get into the language barrier or shifting dialects. What you propose is impossible. The bottom line is either way you're stuck picking through another man's interpetation.
