State narcotics officers made the largest heroin bust in San Mateo County history Tuesday, arresting a man linked to a violent East Palo Alto street gang with ties to Mexican drug-trafficking organizations, the attorney general's office announced.
Seventy pounds of heroin worth about $7 million allegedly was found hidden inside the dashboard of Adam Alfonso Herrera's Lincoln Town Car, a press release from Attorney General Jerry Brown's office said.
Herrera, 27, is a Mexican national who lives on Sacramento Street in East Palo Alto, the release said. He is a known associate of the Sacramento Street Gang, and has prior arrests for domestic abuse, kidnapping and providing false information to a police officer, the release said.
Agents from the state Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement served a search warrant on his car and residence and found a small amount of heroin in the house, in addition to the heroin stored in his car, according to the release.
Herrera was arrested and booked in San Mateo County Jail on charges of possession of heroin for sale and possession of a hidden compartment. His bail was set at $5 million.
State investigators could not be reached late Tuesday for more information.
East Palo Alto police focused on dismantling the Latino "Sac Street" gang after an alleged member was accused of killing Officer Richard May in 2006. Earlier this year, during a bust of a different gang, police said they had been successful
in their efforts against Sac Street members, showing statistics indicating that major crimes committed by the gang had dropped almost 20-fold.
County Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said in his more than three decades with the district attorney's office, no heroin seizure has come close to the 70 pounds found Tuesday.
"There's nothing comparable with this in our county, ever," Wagstaffe said.
