Best Buy To Begin Stocking Unsigned Bands
Jul 17, 2008

Independent artists, rejoice! Music retail behemoth Best Buy is teaming up with Regionalcd.net to stock their shelves and online store with regional and local artists—no major label contract required. Artists who are chosen for the program will have their albums sold in strategically selected Best Buy locations, as well as bestbuy.com. The program will feature a light initial distribution, allowing customer demand to dictate the inventory at each store, thus eliminating pricey overstocking. Approved artists are considered based on Myspace/Facebook page, fan base, and local performances, and will be paid for every CD sold. While the program provides a spectacularly unique opportunity for independent bands, one has to wonder if it's just one more way for Best Buy to drive your local record shop out of business.

Good, I hope Best Buy's actions leads to taking a huge fuckin' shit on the music industry mainstream crap, I doubt it, but I can only wish for the possibility. I wonder how they are gonna sift through all the bullshit though, like what's good and what's not. Will be interesting to see none the less.

Im looking at the bigger picture...Why would a company as big as them be looking to stock shelves with unsigned artists with majority of artists not having a proven fan base? A few years back biggest reason why stores did not stock alot of unsigned artists was because shelf space, and the priority for them spots was major artists ( also factor in labor dealing with extra c.d's)....So why are they taking a risk? Im sure it is due to the lack of sales across the board..sure some albums sell, but these companies were used to having many more sales, not just the big major artists. Its the 4th Quarter doctor, and they are desperate, they are scratching there heads coming up with ways to sell more c.d's problem is it is 4th quarter 4th down with 1 second left and the whole field to score....sounds like a hail mary...If I was a betting man..(Oh I am ) I would say its a great thing for unsigned artists, however the c.d mAy be out the door in about 10 years

I say 5 years or less. I see a lot of car stereo decks with USB/SD card readers already on the market. Not to mention the millions of IPODs and other discless players being sold daily.
WHAT I WOULD LOOK IN TO DOING IS DISTRIBUTING MUSIC IN STORES OR KIOSKS THRU THESE:

I THINK AFTER CD'S . ONLINE DISTRO AND JUMP DRIVES IS THE NEXT THING

That's real right there 50cal. Rumor is that they are actually going to be cutting out most of their CD shelf space and making more room for video games and digital music players. I think what they'll probably do is order the hits from the majors only then have each store buy regionally. So its still about promoting yourself locally and making good music.

I think the CD will stick around. I don't think it's ever going to disappear because people will still not trust their hard drives and memory sticks and computers. I mean the number one reason people say for that argument is "what if your computer crashes? What if its stolen? What if the HD just conks out?" which are all very feasible things that can happen. Then what? Run around to all your friends and jack their music? That sounds like a lot of work. Also some people still like the booklet and the artwork.

who knows...

vinyl sales are up though. Heard Best Buy might even start selling it in their stores as well..
