you better be extremly dedicated homie and mabey, in a couple years you will turn a profit.i know that when i put out the strangulation pt 1 in 06 it was way easier slanging units than it is today.i make a decent profit now from all evilside releases.but down loading is really fucking alot of shit off.i am thankfull of all the people that buy cd's period.its getting slimer n slimer....

its harder for rappers who are just getting in the game cuz everyone has their certain artist they're interested in, and to get peoples attention you gotta be at least coming hard as the other rappers in the game. its ben said on here many times, hand to hand sales is the only way people are gonna buy off you nowadays, people might see your cd in raspuins and pay it no mind but if someone saw you in front of rasputins im pretty sure they would cop it off you rather than they would in the store.

I paid 35.00$(fee per year) to be on iTunes+27 other digital retailers thru reverbnation.
made over 200$ on the first 3 weeks on iTunes alone because they send me trend reports....i wont know anything else til the end of a 90 day cycle but they are obviously the most relevant. still, only 1/28th.

i've sold 65 cds pressing on demand making an average of 3dollars per copy after paypal fees / re-shipping. international shipping is a bitch too but they buying!!...

my reverbnation store i have no hand in and get 4.50 a copy ( 17@ 9.50 per copy cuz i had the price higher during pre-release weeks)...and have sold 31 copies total that way... All in a month.

obviously Profitable for me the way i choose to do it...
if i had more time and resources i feel i could push numbers with the best of em....
i have been recording for a minute tho, putting in a lot of footwork networking...
thats an Authentic and humble break down of my get down sir...

If you arent known i say you just release mixtapes, not no bullshit half assed mixtape eitber with some dr.dre beats, but create a buzz. Aint nobody gonna want to buy a cd from somebody they never heard of. Invest in your shit, make it great quality over good quality, dont rush shit. Dont focus in making money off this rap shit, i'd rather have a buzz and have people slapping my shit over only trippin off album sales, too each their own though. Good luck on your project.

Before you even start, know you gotta be dedicated to it. I put out an album by myself. 17 total tracks, 1 intro, 1 outro, 1 interlude and 1 remix of a song on the album. That took me roughly a year and a half just for the recording portion of it. I have a full time job, a wife and 2 kids so it's tougher for me AND I was fortunate enough to be able to right at work while nothing was going on.

Also understand that beats are so important. If people ain't feelin the beat in the first 5 seconds, they probably ain't gonna listen to it on itunes or myspace or whatever unless they are a big fan or have listened to the whole album and wanna hear what you had to say. I've spent countless times listening to beats before deciding which ones to use.

If you want good beats, you have to be fortunate enough to know someone that makes them or come outta pocket from anywhere from 100-400 each beat.

Then it's an even harder hustle to get your name out there.

Best of luck but it's not easy

My first album, The Rogish Lifestyle, I made about $150. Just slanging them on the streets $5 bucks a piece. I wasnt pushing the most I could. With No Suckas I made around $600 buckas at the end, $10 bucks a piece. But thats after I took out the money from the Mixing, and the pressing. And flyers, and ads. My next CD im working on a solo, I plan to push that shit like crazy. Hopefully make at least 700 or 800 to keep repressing if it goes good. Most of the money goes to the studio I record at and the pressing. Homeboy music, you need to be dedicated and want it bad, or else you aint going no where.

How much you make depends on your hustle. If you press 1000 CDs and you sell every one at $10 a pop, that $10,000. That comes out to be around $9000 profit. If you want money you gotta work no matter what you do. Go work them sales one potential fan at a time.

i used to be able to live off of it until everybody and there mother tried to be greedy and label themselves rappers, wholesalers and retailers. Like Smokey said downloading killed it but HBR supporters like to support and get CDs and not bootleg alot of times but the market went down the drain, Itunes is good because it cuts cost down on pressing anything but u need to some loyal followers to buy from Itunes. its all about merchandising these days.

the math isn't the issue tho bro. It's not that easy to move 10k units in some markets. I used to work for a small label here in oklahoma doing Christian hip hop. Used to have shows with hundreds of people, one of the only acts in town. Church camps etc... word was out on the label from here to all over texas, arkansas etc... it still took 3 projects to eclipse 10k units. People knew about it everywhere and you'd be hard pressed to find a place to download it illegally and everyone knew the name but still, you dig?
