LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a dislocated right wrist -- a major blow for a team with high expectations.

Team spokesman Jim Christman confirmed a Chicago Tribune report, saying, "Brian did have surgery this morning and he is out for the remainder of the season." Urlacher had said in a text message to the newspaper that his "season is over."

Urlacher apparently was injured in the first quarter of Sunday night's 21-15 loss at Green Bay making a tackle on Packers running back Ryan Grant. He left on the Packers' first drive of the second half.

Urlacher, a six-time Pro Bowl player, had started 49 consecutive games in his 10-year career and has missed a total of seven games -- all in 2004 with a hamstring injury.

The Bears have been in contact with free-agent linebacker Derrick Brooks to fill the void left by Urlacher's injury, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, and it's possible the Bears could sign Brooks as early as Monday.

"It's always tough to have your leader go down," linebacker Lance Briggs said, according to the Tribune. "He knows the defense better than anybody and he communicates everything to everyone else."

Urlacher made several plays in the first half, including when he lowered his right shoulder into the quarterback Aaron Rodgers after he had released the ball on a third down to send him sprawling.

I think the disheartning part of it all was that the camera kept going back to Urlacher on the sideline where he wasn't showing pain and the wrist wasn't really that wrapped up. He actually looked like he could hop back in there the next play.

Anyway, it's a weird, unfortunate injury. Hopefully the surgery ane rehab go well.

After the dislocation has been corrected, the joint may require immobilization with a cast, splints or sling for 4 to 8 weeks. Complete healing of injured ligaments requires a minimum of 6 weeks.. I dont understand how they have him listed as out for the entire season when he would and should be able to get back into action by week 14 at the latest.

Check this out lol!

That is a tough loss. Sorry to hear that Bears fans, that's like us losing P-Willis, and I know I'd probably call in sick from work and weep all day.

Ya'll still got Briggs tho!

2-0-Sixx - What does your depth look like at LB now that Urlacher's out and Pisa's questionable?

they supposedly wont move Lance Briggs inside, so Hunter Hillenmeyer is the likely candidate to start. Apparently they're working on signing 1 or 2 special teams linebackers (Tim Shaw, Khary Campbell) and not ruling out signing Derrick Brooks

wow i hate injuries to the nfls best. they make games better to watch even on teams i fucking hate like urlacher on the bears, palomalu on the steelers etc....

i just like watching good football and wins dont amount to as much when you beat a battered team.
