To the Rap Buyers from the Bay Area, I have heard alot of you complaining about the Yukmouth cd not having proper promotions. What do you consider proper promotions? The problem has been stated now maybe we can get some intellect and get some solutions.

Yukmouth is NOT on a Major Label he was INDEPENDENT, he was on Rap-A-Lot/Asylum. Asylum is NOT a Major Label it is a "subsidiary" of Warner Brothers, and they will upgrade some of there artists to Warner Brothers but Asylum itself is NOT a Major. Just wanted to get that cleared up first.

Now would you of liked to see him do a Murder Dog Magazine Ad? a Murder Dog Magazine Ad Campaign? Source Ad? XXL Ad? BET Commercial Campaign? Clear Channel Radio Campaign? BAY AREA Promotional Tour? Snipe The BAY AREA? Or would you of just wanted him to have a Internet Team that came directly to siccness.net and kept the people on the board informed?

Your ideas could help the next person inline. You right here are letting your artists know what you want from them promotions wise before the release of their cds. Maybe they will use some of your promotional ideas.

P.S.,
I just wanted to say I to wish that J. Prince would of done a better job of promoting the Yukmouth cd, but in another light, it saved Yukmouth from being in debt to J. Prince and the Rap-A-Lot imprint. All the services that an artists uses to promote their cd is charged to the artist. Just like a Credit Card Bill. Only the video budget is 50% Recoupable. If you spend a Million Dollars on the LABEL Promoting your project, you owe a Million Dollars to that LABEL.

i saw a commercial on BET for the cd, that helped. I know people who are huge Yukmouth fans that had no clue the cd was coming out until i told em. i guess if they are going word of mouth promotion it somewhat worked.

edit: as i was writing this i asked my brother if he got the cd and he said i had no idea it was coming out. exactly what im talkin bout.

seen the bet ad, but corrrect me if im wrong but isnt that just regional? but this goes for any artists that id wanna see

flyers at stores, liquor stores an such. maybe a promo van hittin different citys an shit with free posters or something. RADIO INTERVIEWS!

why the fuck is the artist from a cartain area but cant get on the radio while some no name NY cat on that shit? i know its politics but its time we the people realize. with out us, there aint no "radio polititcs". i understand a majority of listeners are bandwagons an do an listen an buy whatever is hot because someone told them but fuck them an fuck that.

edit:

an regards to the internet campaign, if you or anny other rapper does it, i have this to advise:

keep it short an sweet.

maybe just drop the name of the cd, the cover, track list, feature, some important news i.e. so an so signed a deal, so an so got in a wreck but is ok, so an so went to jail or got shot or whatever. no bullshit news like so an so is in the studio right now!!!! who gives a fuck? thats they job. to entertain us. we paying for they lives so id expect em to be at least thinking about the next dope line im about to hear or the next funny skit im going to laugh at. i dont need to be reminded that so an so is in the studio with another person making a track i probably wont hear for around a year.

up this

somethin like this needs to turn in to a discussion because this is exactly the type of shit that people bitch and complain about all the time, so lets get it all out in the open, and somethin positive can come of it and like he said people can learn from it and act on it

as far as internet campaigns go make sure to keep the pages on social networks updated. visit bulletin boards such as this one with major updates like fillyacup said, but don't flood the boards with useless info. I don't need to know if your artist got a new chain and is ballin on suckas tellin us to step our game up. I would however like to know that your artist is releasing something soon and the release date or that the release date was changed AND WHY. try not to leak too many tracks from the album before its release, we wanna hear new shit and will be discouraged if half the album was already circulating the net

I think we'd all like to see XXL Ads, Source ads, Bet commercials, but its not that easy. Its a shame especially being over here on the east. You hardly ever see any ads for anything from the west or the east as a matter of fact. i think an artist like Yuk has a strong enough fan base to make it pop without these aforementioned things, XXL, BET, etc. but it seemed like MDMP had nothing. no Promo at all!! a little bit of effort would have been appreciated. ya know!!

Also i think a lot of people dont find Ads in major magazines to be beneficial. honestly, because if 90% of these magazines are filled with bullshit and usually the good releases go unseen or skipped right over!!
I agree updating things such as myspace and hitting the boards might be the best!!

real shit. posters an flyers will never die. thats the truest form of advertising you can get. shit, street teams the shit! i know if i seen a wall off the freeway straight BOMBED with some bay artist cd i would most definatly check it out if not cop it. i know you can promote vandals, but you get what i mean.

an i also feel what dude said about mag ads. alot of people are starting to wise up an realze magazines is all politics. for every 1 ad that an artist shelled out cash for there gotta be about 10 thats all industry hype

i think one of the problems is that the release data was told to the public too late. next time i would like to see yuk drop a single + video a couple months in advance to gain hype from people who havent heard of yukmouth, that was sorely missing for MDMP

im a pretty big yuk fan and i only found out 3-4 weeks ago MDMP was dropping, imagine how many people dont even know he droppped a new album, try and appeal to those people

Very beneficial. So you feel they got the information to the buying community too late? And you are correct, a "street" single, first video and commerical ads should start 90 Days before the release date.

Eveyone is really putting in some good advice. I like to know that the San Quinn promotions on the College Campus' made an impact.

make sure the album is PROPERLY/PROFESSIONALLY MIXED/MASTERED because thats the one thing that pisses me off about mdmp and alot of other yay area cds. and make sure the package doesnt contain no gay ass corny shooting stars. *for those who actually bought mdmp* it makes the cd look corny and may turn the buyer off from buying it.

Yes he was trying to get out of his Rap-A-Lot contract, but he put alot of effort into the release and tried to come extremely lyrical. He was trying to prove a point of being one of the industry's best rap artists. I also am sure that even though he was trying to get this last Rap-A-Lot cd out as to be released from his contract, you know he wanted it to sell extremely well so that he would have a phat payday from Rap-A-Lot and Asylum. Could of been alot of money to be made.

Also I wanted to ask the buying public, do you appreciate when Labels pass out quality samplers of a cd? I mean a sampler that gives you alot of the album but cuts off maybe the last verse and hook. That way you get a feel for the project before it comes out. Is that Helpful?
