YO, I'VE BEEN TELLIN ALL MY ARTISTS AND OR AFFILIATES THAT OVERSEAS IS WHERE IT'S AT. FIRST AND FOREMOST THEY FUCKIN LOVE HIP HOP OVER THERE MORE THAN BREATHING AIR. SECOND AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THEY HAVE MUCH LOVE FOR THE BAY. NOW I CANT SPEAK ON ALL OF EUROPE, BUT I CAN SPEAK ON, GERMANY, FRANCE, THE UK, AND MOSTLY NORWAY. OVER IN NORWAY ARTISTS LIKE RICK ROCK, MIKE MOSLEY AND ASSASSIN ARE CONSIDERED LEGENDS. MY HOMIE FROM HERE IN NY NAMED CEE-ROCK THE FURY WENT OVER THERE LAST YEAR OPENING FOR MOBB DEEP AND WAS TREATED LIKE AS BIG A STAR AS MOBB DEEP. IT WAS BANANAS. WHEN MOSLEY AND TQ TOURED OVER THERE IT WAS SCARY HOW MUCH LOVE THEY GOT. MY HOMIE J-DOGGZ IS A BIG PLAYER IN THE HIP HOP SCENE IN EUROPE AND HE ALWAYS SAYS IF CATS IN THE USA KNEW HOW MUCH MONEY WAS SITTIN OVER THERE, THEY WOULD NEVER DO SHOWS IN THE STATES AGAIN. IF YOU NEED MORE INFO, HOLLA AT ME AND I'LL HOOK YA UP. ARE YOU PLANNING ON TOURING OVERSEAS ANYTIME SOON.

i wouldn't say that cats out here are hip to the bay in general but the ones that are are probably the most hardcore fans. shieeet, we never get to see our favorite rappers in concert here so of course everybody goes wild! LOL
only bay cat that i ever saw in concert in germany was yuk but his show sucked ass big time. he was too much on that superstar shit and only did like 5 songs. plus they were announced as the luniz and only yuk and dru down showed up.
i have seen b-legit, nickatina, done deal and them in concert but that was over in sacramento when i was there.
i honestly don't think that you could gather a huge crowd for such a show here because there are just not enough people digging that bay area rap. they are mostly into living legends, rasco and even anticon and so on.....

but i think berlin would be the best guess for a concert here. there's more people hip to westcoast rap here than anywhere except maybe frankfurt and surroundings where alotta GIs used to be stationed.....

if you wanna come over and do a show holla atcha boy and i might be able to get you in touch with the right people....

I can't speak on Europe but in the UK shit is getting twisted.

First up people doing they own thing on the whole UK rap vibe (no disrespect but I hate so much of that shit) and because of that they not really feeling US acts.

Matter of fact some dudes put out a tune over the Ja Rule New York beat saying fuck New York calling out rappers tellin them not to come to London and shit.

That kind of attitude is creepin in, you know, hating, keeping it real to their local artists. I know Dame Dash or someone with Jay Z got slapped in Paris a year or two as well.

But... for those people who still bump the hell out of all hip hop, there are really two types here, the kids who be on the dick of G-Unit or anyone pop, and the backpackers who like no one but some obscure dudes.

I got to be real and say there ain't really a lot of knowledge or love for West Coast rap out here. I feel how it is in Germany, but it's no use pretending just because a few of us feel it, the majority in Europe have no idea man.

Part of the problem is distribution and cost. You just ain't going to see any West Coast or particularly Bay music in shops here, so no one knows it. I got 500 or 600 bay CD's and I'm willing to bet no other copies exist in this country of some of them.

My car got jacked last summer and CD's that stay in my ride was turning up on ebay here at stupid prices. Motherfucka's put Funk Mobb CD, Black Rhino CD at like £0.99... and no one was bidding. No one fucking has a clue, I just bought the shit back.

And talking on distribution, if a west coast or bay CD does ever show up here, the chains put a stupid import prices, like the Fed's album on Virgin was retailing at £20.99 (almost $40) in stores. Who the fuck will buy that unless they already a fan?

So if you have that culture where people only stay up on the megastars pushing platinum albums, really unless you're a name there isn't a lot of point talking concerts. That's not a diss, it's just true.

My boy is a promoter and he has put on some shows and fucked with some serious acts, but dude gets a list of possible acts who will come over and prices, he was telling me DJ Quik and 40 water were on the list.

He knows I got mad love for these acts but he was like 'why the fuck would I pay 8-10 thousand to bring them over, when you can barely buy their albums and only about 5 people heard of them, how would I recoup cost? That's the truth.

So if you coming over you practically got to be riding the coat tails of someone famous or do it out of love or for free.

And for gods sake do it on the hip hop tip, some cats try and slide into Europe on alternative shows or in like music festivals. Don't do that. In the UK, people who don't like hip hop DON'T LIKE hip hop, ya feel me, they fucking hate it. Matter of fact 50 Cent got bottled off stage by a bunch of white middle class kids at some 'festival' last year. They hate hip hop man.

Other than that, I can speak on concerts and shows out here because my city, Bristol (pop 500-600,000) has had three big ones in the last week that I touched down at.

Tony Touch was over here a week ago, Mobb Deep showed up on Wednesday, and then Beatnuts on Saturday.

Touch was showing love to a 'drum and bass' night which is real big in this city. Mobb Deep rolled in with Alchemist and Big Noyd, it was a trip to see such legends but the place wasn't really rammed and it was mainly a bunch of idiots in the place and people in G-Unit wear with fake Cubic Zirconium spinners on they necks.

Mobb Deep can sell a show because people know the name, but it didnt sell out and at £21 ($40) for 45 minutes of P and Havoc is stretching loyalty and most customers looked disgruntled in the end.

Beatnuts were incredible but from the venue to the show to the crowd, you could tell they were not there for the money, so they were real. And you don't even need to know the Beatnuts because they can rock any party, they're just fun cats.

I can't speak on a West Coast act because none ever come and if they did unless its Snoop it ain't going to sell. In fact right now UK hip hop and love for hip hop in the UK is as far from west coast sound as possible, they all like grimey big bass sound.

Only a few cats round here got love for the synths and the funk and slumpers. I could play a few Rick Rock tunes in a deejay set and people would feel it, but truthfully unless you want to lose a crowd, you got to play pop hip hop people have heard - 50, diddy, mase etc

So bottom line, shows only sell out here on name or reputation or cats who can touch more than one crowd. Best example I can think are Ozomatli who sell out venues in minutes, they got to be a promoters dream, because they touch more than just hip hop.

Being as West Coast music gets so little exposure out here, no one will have heard of 99% of all cats, so doing a show out here is a non-starter because who would pay to turn up?
I would pay but really and honestly no one else would so its not economic in the UK unless you're a UK rap act or a superstar from New York. Anything else won't pay.

real shit!!!

i feel you! especially on the fact that there are no mom and pop stores around that sell bay shit or other underground shit except that backpacker stuff. but it's changing here at least i guess. nowadays you got a couple of internet peeps who import bay and southern shit to make a living. and the prices are reasonable mainly because the dollar's so low at the moment. but it's still not in the stores....

I heard that, its true man, the independent record stores out here do sell obscure things but never Bay because they only sell what they can lay their hands on.

Bay CD's will never pass through their hands because the only time they are ever shipped out of the US is when we as customers buy individual copies mail order.

Until there is an economic sensible distribution that gets wholesale independent product to independent retailers in Europe, we'll never see Bay CD's out here.

But then most independent bay CD's are pressed as like what 1,000 - 5,000 copies? It's not worthwhile for a bay artist to cover distribution costs to get say 100 copies in stores overseas.

You sell to your market, there is no market here for Bay music so a cat should just sell the CD's in Norcal where the fan base is and the rest of us swoop via mail order.

The only way to get a market for bay music out here is to invest in the distribution and promotion which is where a major label comes in. Thats the way to the exposure which will create a market for more bay music.

I've yet to believe it's possible to be independent and truly worldwide. Selling CD's off cdbaby.com and such like doesn't count, I mean worldwide as in having your CD's in stores in other countries.

No one from the bay really has that, I'd love to know the scans for cats like E-40 in the UK. The distribution even by the big labels for the Bay's finest is weak.

From what I see available in music stores to the average customer, I'm willing to bet there are < 50 copies of either Breaking News or the Federation album in the UK.

So if even these cats with Jive or Virgin behind them can't get they're music into enough stores (at a realistic price) for people to buy their shit, a real market for the Bay over here will never exist.

And then we're talking about shows? With no market, no CD's in stores out here? Forget it.

The show might give you a little shine but no one will pay to see a rapper they've never heard of, and how many shows will it take to create a market from nothing?

I'm not being negative, just being realistic - lets be honest folks if there is no market there is no money and who is going to spend money travelling to Europe to do shows in the hope of creating a market from nothing.

That is a lot of investment of time and money to try and get some extra fans who at best were turning up to a show to see someone else. Realistically not many rappers is going to waste time fucking with that hustle.

The only paper route I can see is cats who are really getting their music heard worldwide over the internet.

The artists who have successfully grasped the net to distribute their music and most of all create a buzz, are the ones who can create a market in new countries from nothing.

Cats have street teams, why not have an online equivalent. This is hypothetical, but lets say Chuck at Done Deal put out Ya Boy's 16's with me as a free MP3, paid the bandwidth on the download, and had cats getting that shit onto every forum and message board in every corner of the globe.

Two clicks and cats everywhere would be hearing the track. How much buzz would that be? From little time, effort or spend. The track was fire, and suddenly you've got 10,000 people worldwide who know that and will be typing 'Ya Boy' in on Amazon for months until they can get the album over here. Next up it will be in shops.

Then there's your market. A huge one. And then when someone says this cat is coming over to the UK to do a show, there will actually be people checking and paying to see that show. But no market, no show...

I know its not this simple, but I damn nearly seen it happen this way. I've let cats peep a Quinn CD or a Mac Dre CD and I seen people at my workplace sitting there on Amazon trying to find out how to buy it after.

If the Bay want to be successful overseas, this is the only way its going to happen...

Its a nice idea, but it's not going to happen with major label support (where is that Feds CD and who bought it over here, why is no one in stores asking where the last 3 E-40 albums are?), abd it's not going to happen by doing some shows to people who never heard of you (a lot of investment and travel for very little time to shine, in a country where people cant even buy your music).

Sorry if this offends anyone, I've only got love for the Bay and the amount of time and money I spend getting CD's over here proves that, it's all I listen to, 99% of the time. I just wanted to give you an informed perspective of the market for that music over here.

I'd be tripping to see anyone from the Bay come over and do a show, I'd be all over that, but it's no point not being realistic about it and letting you know truthfully how effective or successful it would really be.

Hey y'all i'm from the cold world Finland, me n' my homies got love for all of the bay. Have only been reading da boards for now but gotta welcome everyone to tour in Finland. We had Spice 1 just recently here but i missed it. Also I know a lot of very skilled finnish artists that would be really interested in doing a joint or two with bay area rappers. We get foreign artists rarely so there is usually a crapload of people waiting to get in. The only bad part is that it's so damn expensive.. like 30 euros usually to get in.

Sayin' no one here has heard of west coast rap acts here is bullshit. It's just too bad most of the people have to use p2p to get any of the CD's since there is probably only one store in Helsinki that sells CD's from the bay... though you would be surprised of everything they have there.

If you are interested in performing in finland you should probably contact kool kat records
www.koolkatrecords.fi
They organize most of the rap events and get all the foreign artists here.

Haha hell yeah that fool Dame Dash and security got beaten up inside a local footlocker by some fools who wanted his camera. And oh yeah he's actin tough on that Beef DVD he says he beat up French pimps, come on please.

About the shows in Europe I haver to let u know the French market is into rap with 2nd most sellin country in the world for years now but most ppl will listen to east coast or french rap. There is a small but hardcore west fan base though.
Some rap acts from the west did well in paris: snoop, defari, x, but not many from the bay even yuk ignored us
