DICE is releasing the next Battlefield on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC, and we were the first to go hands-on with the game.

There's a tangible buzz in the air at DICE's Stockholm headquarters. It's indicative of a studio hard at work, which is not surprising, given the number of unannounced games that the company must be working on right now. So it's with some sense of relief that producers Patrick Liu and Gordon Van Dyke are finally able to talk about their own project, which will be the latest game in the beloved Battlefield series. Named Battlefield 1943, the game will be a download-only game for Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC.

Our demo began with the same trailer that you can see alongside this preview. It proudly announces that Battlefield 1943 will use the Frostbite engine--the same one that powered the destructible environments in Bad Company--after which it shows off the land-, sea-, and air-based combat that should be more familiar to players of Battlefield 1942. The message seems to be that this is classic Battlefield multiplayer updated with cutting-edge technology, a thought that's only reinforced by the inclusion of the Wake Island map from Battlefield 1942. Van Dyke explains that 1943 will have more in common with Bad Company in terms of gameplay, but with all of the things that made 1942 great. That includes a heavy focus on vehicular combat, as well as the obvious similarities in historical setting.

After the trailer, the conversation naturally turned to the game's download-based delivery. It's a topic that the team is excited to talk about, while simultaneously being keen to gauge our opinion on. "We want Battlefield 1943 to be the premium downloadable game on consoles," Van Dyke said. With a technologically advanced engine powering a new entry in a proven franchise, that shouldn't be too much of a problem, but at what cost? "We're not talking about that just yet," he conceded, "but think premium pricing along the lines of something like Braid." Even more surprising, the team said that the game will weigh in as a paltry 350MB download, at least on Xbox Live.

As for the game itself, the maximum number of online players will be 24, and you'll be able to play as both the US Marines and the Japanese Imperial Army. The lack of bot support is a small niggle for those who wish to practice, but that doesn't stop it from being newbie-friendly; you'll be able to level up your character and show your experience to others, but it won't afford you extra weapons or abilities. Battlefield 1943 will offer the Conquest game mode only, which means that you have to capture and control five points on the map to win the game, with capture points offering you and your team new points from which to respawn. As for maps, Liu and Van Dyke talked about the aforementioned Wake Island, as well as Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal.

Once we'd gone through the stats with the producers, they offered us the chance to play against DICE employees through two matches on the Wake Island map. Battlefield stalwarts will immediately recognise the boomerang-shaped layout of the map, with two aircraft carriers located off of each tip. We started the game on one of these carriers and immediately ran toward one of the aircraft. Piloting the plane was initially a bit tricky but quickly became intuitive; the right trigger is used to accelerate and the right analogue stick changes your pitch and roll. These aircraft are equipped with machine guns and rockets, and the Frostbite engine lets you topple entire buildings through judicious use of the latter.

Our experience with the new game was punctuated by some incredible standout moments. Playing as the Japanese side, we were able to melee-kill someone using a samurai sword, a bizarre but highly entertaining weapon. There were times when airplanes blasted overhead, toppling the buildings around us but miraculously missing us entirely. But our favourite moment was jumping into an air-raid shelter, which provided temporary cover against the enemy while we piloted a formation of aircraft to bomb a target. You have to time the bombing run just right to hit your target--which we failed to do on our one and only go--but with the right skill, these shelters should have the ability to turn the course of games.

Even at this early stage, Battlefield 1943 is incredibly fun to play. It possesses all of the hallmarks of a great Battlefield game, and the Frostbite engine offers the graphics that you'd expect in a full retail release. If you're interested in playing the game and you're in the New York area this weekend, then head to Comic-Con, where the team will be giving hands-on demos on February 6, 7, and 8. With the game in pre-alpha already, we're hoping to see a lot more of it in the coming months, so keep your radar tracked to GameSpot for more info as we get it.

This game is fucking dope if you played the PC version from couple years back. This is the sort of incentive that we as videogamers need more of. DICE has announced that when 43 million community kills have been achieved in its upcoming Battlefield 1943, a brand new map called Coral Sea will be unlocked. Both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 users will have to "team up" to reach this lofty goal.

The game is set to ship to consoles and PC later this summer; three maps plus the hidden unlockable Coral Sea will included for the price of $15 or 1,200 Microsoft Points.

Coral Sea is designed to showcase the intense battle in the skies, offering an all-new Air superiority game mode. The legendary WWII action this map provides will have players dog fighting in this airplanes-only map, proving once again DICE delivers on a first class online vehicle warfare experience better than anyone else!

According to EA's press release players will be able to track their respective platform's progress at the official Battlefield 1943 site.

I loved battlefield badcompany and the earlier battlefields out on the p/c are really what got me into shooters, along with counter-strike.. It seems like they stayed true to their roots here too, by keeping the vehicles, character classes, destructible environments, capturing targets, and a lot of the same features that appeared in the previous battlefields.

Most the reviews i read gave it a 8ish outa 10.. Here's IGN review which i found a good read, and really got me excited about this game.. As soon as i wake up im goin down to best buy to cop me some MS points so i can get down!

The good news: Battlefield 1943 is out, giving console owners a chance to blow each other up under blue skies and palm trees. The bad news: for a ton of people, it's just not working.

We've been hearing all day from readers who bought the game, fired it up, and couldn't play it. At all. There's some serious technical issues marring the game's launch at the moment, which EA claim are the result of the servers being full, courtesy of player numbers being much higher than EA were expecting.

So if you can't get into a game, that's why. In the meantime, more servers are being added, so our advice is wait a day or two, then try and get in. Sorry.

Fuckin a.. Jus bought this game and i can't even connect.. Now i'm reading that theirs 30min waits to get in games for some players, and when you do get into one it disconnects.. ANd their saying it'll take 'till this weekend to fix it probably.. Fuck that, i was really lookin foward to playin this game.. I love battlefield, but man, this isn't a good start..

Don't buy this game if you're expecting to play it right away.. Best bet is to wait until the whole issues been resolved.. Sorta sucks i cant even find a fuckin game.

DICE's Battlefield 1943 was released on XBLA only a few hours ago to a literally overwhelming response. Unfortunately, according to DICE the game has exceeded their expectations and completely bogged down their servers.

On the upside for DICE this means they are topping their profit margin, but on the downside, for gamers who are experiencing these technical issues, it is sadly delivering an epic fail.

Taking the Battlefield franchise in the direction of a new business model by offering the latest game as a relatively low priced ($14.99) XBL Arcade shooter, might have seemed like a good idea at the time, but the limited server capacity has caused some gamers to call foul.

Complaints abound of poor lag time and an inability to actually even get in a match, with wait times exceeding a whooping 30 minutes and, in some cases, even resulting in a full blown system crash.

For their part, DICE is frantically attempting to add new servers to meet the demand, but this is doing little to consul gamers who have already purchased the non-refundable download.

Reports indicate that UK gamers are feeling the brunt of it, but this could be a result of time difference more than server capacity.

No doubt DICE will invest more time and resources into acquiring new server space, but in all likelihood the issues will not be fully resolved until sometime this weekend. For some gamers, the damage has already been done.

But perhaps Battlefield fans shouldn't feel too bad. Yes, the current issues are deserving of complaints, after all who wants to buy something that doesn't work, but on a positive note, it might mean that the game already has a strong following. It’s also important to note that upon release the game is being offered as a demo version too, no doubt just adding to the server workload.

The good news is that once these issues are resolved, and considering the number of interested gamers who downloaded Battlefield 1943, chances are that players are not going to have any difficulties finding matches in the future.

Overall it seems like a clunky start, but if DICE values its customers and fan base, these problems will be resolved in a timely fashion. Hopefully the new servers being added will not only be of good quality, but also finally meet the demand.

has anybody played this that played battlefield 1942?
Thats all i played for a whole summer lol.. This game plays a lot like the earlier battlefields then it does Bad Company.. Which i think is a good thing.. Sitting on the boats waitin for the planes to respawn couldn't remind me more how much i missed playin this game haha

I'am hopeing they keep releasin new maps.. But the 2 i've played so far are really nicley done, and big, but not HELLA big like what was in Bad Company.. Their just big enough to where you'll see plenty of action running from one point to the next.

and if i havent said it already.. the plane is fuckin HELLA fun to drive.. you can get hella close to the ground and drop bombs on tanks and targets or fly hella high above and try you're luck mowin 'em down with tha machine guns.
