A Boston firefighter accused of smoking marijuana inside a fire department vehicle was handcuffed and taken to jail this morning after a judge revoked his bail on an unrelated domestic violence case.

Anthony Gaston, 47, was arrested Friday afternoon along with two other men after police allegedly caught them smoking a joint inside a fire department vehicle. One of the men inside the car is an accused drug dealer, prosecutors said. Gaston, who appeared in Dorchester District Court this morning, pleaded not guilty to drug possession charges.

Gaston was supposed to go to trial later this month for allegedly trying to strangle a woman and punching her last summer, according to Assistant District Attorney Brooke Watson.

There were no uniformed Boston firefighters in the court this morning. Gaston’s attorney declined comment.

Gaston was arrested Friday at about 2:40 p.m. on Dunlap Street - across from Dorchester District Court - after police spotted him sitting in a car and smoking what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette. Police pulled three men out of the car and discovered five bags of marijuana, three joints, and a plastic pill bottle inside. Also charged with possession of marijuana were Richard Jackson, 43, of Mattapan and Andre Knox, 41, of Dorchester.

Knox has a pending case for possession with intent to distribute drugs in a school zone. Knox and Jackson were released today.

Gaston, a fire prevention inspector, was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of this trial.

Gaston is a fire prevention officer and is assigned a Fire Department car for his job inspecting gas stations and oil tanks to ensure code compliance.

Gaston’s arrest comes amid growing acrimony between the city and union officials over mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

As the Herald has reported, sources say autopsies they read on two firefighters who died while battling a restaurant blaze last summer reportedly show one had alcohol and the other had cocaine in his system.
