and Reggie Miller if he was still playing..

The NBA might have given its players something to complain about this season -- something other than the new basketball.

In an attempt to get players to curtail post-whistle whining, NBA referee representatives have made the rounds early in training camp to emphasize the league's zero-tolerance policy.

Stein: No Sympathy
Don't expect open-mindedness from NBA commissioner David Stern if players follow Rasheed Wallace's lead and decry the NBA's determination to clean up post-whistle barking at referees.

Marc Stein has analysis in his blog, which is available by clicking here.

Commissioner David Stern, long fed up with players' histrionics over questionable calls, is threatening to hit them with quick technical fouls -- and later fines -- for those who curse, throw their hands up, or make other gestures that show disgust.

"The thought process is we have the best athletes in the world, playing a spectacular game as well as it has ever been played," Stern said. "In my view it detracts from it, when a small handful of players spend their time negotiating and slowing the game down, at least in the perception of the fans, by engaging in an enterprise which is not productive."

Stern said a crackdown was long overdue.

"All it does is show a less attractive side to the greatest athletes in the world," Stern said Wednesday. "The coaches don't mind this because, as a result, it means the player will get back on defense rather than staying down to argue a call he didn't get on the offensive end."

Rasheed Wallace, for one, told the Detroit News he took the league's crackdown personally.

"It's just another 'Sheed Wallace rule," Wallace, shaking his head, told the newspaper. "It just means I must be doing something right. Any time they change the rules of the game for one specific player, you must be doing something right."

The league's fine system, which was introduced last season, includes a $1,000 fine for each of the first five, $1,500 for the next five, $2,000 for the next five, $2,500 for the ones that follow, and, in addition, a one-game suspension for every other technical after the 15th.

"What happens if I am one of the captains?" Wallace asked the News. "Does that mean I can't talk to them? You can't talk back to them like they're your mom and dad. It's like they're saying, 'If you say something to me I am going to put you on punishment.' That's how it is. I will come up with some way to tell them how I feel."

Wallace was issued 16 technical fouls last season and a one-game suspension. It's reasonable to think, if referees consistently show zero tolerance, he could double that total.

"It'll be an adjustment for everybody in the league," the Heat's Dwyane Wade told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Heat coach Pat Riley believes players will still be able to express their opinions to officials, but will have to police their body language and tone of voice.

"They are going to be very conscious of player complaining," Riley said last week. "That's one of the big things with them. Every call, there's always 10 guys complaining to the officials. They're just telling them to cut it out."

Nah...its borderline pathetic when players sit there and jaw-jack a ref during fouls shots....and people like Gayr Payton who will say something EVERYTIME he runs by the official for The REST OF THE GAME....

You dont ever see that in football and rarely do you see it in baseball....but it happens on a regular basis in the NBA....

Just play the fuckin game...

It's called entertainment. And GP was the best at it. It's fun for the whole family.

The NBA IS pathetic. You can’t even touch the players any more on Defense. Everything and everything is considered a foul. You can’t talk to the refs. Can’t complain. Can’t make hand gestures after a dunk or a blocked shot. Can’t even stare at a player in the wrong way. It's pathetic. The sport sucks thanks to David Stern and his faggoty rules (what's the status on the dress code btw?).

You dont ever see that in football
Maybe because they have helmets on.

and rarely do you see it in baseball
Because there is NOTHING TO CONTEND. But when they do finally have something to bitch about they put on a great show for their fans. (think lou pinella, et al)

In the NBA, when you get called for a defensive foul for breathing on guy going up for a lay-up, it's going to piss you off. And most people will vent. And that happens nearly ever whistle blow.

....but it happens on a regular basis in the NBA....
Because people get called for non-existing fouls on the regular.

I dont really think its entertaining when a player cries to the ref for 5 minutes after a whistle is blown when he should be playing D. I mean shit talking to other players is one thing--though I can see an arguement for that as well.

its just the new direction they're taking the league. personally, I love it. it allows for a more offensive game, more points, more running, more excitement. there are some plays that should be called more loosely.. but shit like hand checking just slows down the game because it doesnt allow the point guard to run the floor

I see what you're saying, I just disagree. I love the direction basketball is going. Its becoming more international--more involved. the league was obviously in its prime when Jordan was dominating and when he left, it kinda took a turn toward the shitter. but I think its improving greatly now. and Im not trying to say Dantoni is the mastermind behind all the new changes, but hes done a lot for the game in only 2 years. he's made "small ball" popular again. teams all over the league are taking pages out of his book.

We'll just have to agree to disagree because the NBA lost a one time NBA fan. I hate all this offense mentality shit. It makes talented teams do poorly (it's not all about who can run down the court and lay up the ball you know).

And too many games have been decided because of non-existent fouls, not too mention how it can actually SLOW down the pace of a game. Foul, foul, foul, some games that’s all you hear is the whistle.

I remember a time when players had to be equally as good on defense as offense. Now day’s players are mostly one dimensional. And yes, IMO, the shit talking to the refs is entertaining, especially if the player doing the talking is on the home team. Fans love it.

I'm with 2-0-Sixx. Let them play basketball. The league has turned the sport into some bitch shit where everything is a foul. I don't know about you, but watching free throws isn't exciting to me..

I'll stick to football..

Shit...i luv that shit!!!Reminds me of the playground where i dominated cats 2X my size...Run & Gun....

I hear you...but you think NBA players would GET IT by now...dont touch the guy...go for the steal when you have a chance at a swipe....if a offensive player knows the defensive players cant touch him right out....it gives that defensive player a better chance to pounce on the ball due to the offensive player lookin for team mates or thinkin of his next move....

Not me...its one thing to get your point across....sometimes even the player loses FOCUS of the actual game cus all he wants to do is bitch about something HE CANT GET BACK....it happened...move on...

Its fun for OTHER sports...cus it does NOT happen as often...thus being entertained when Lou Pinella goes ona tyraid...

Either way....I luv the NBA...its my favorite sport next to college football...and the only way i will STOP watching...is if my Sonics move to OKC....

^^Well looks like you got one more year to watch the NBA. Bye bye Sonics! (I will forever boycott the NBA, with exception for when the Bulls make it to the finals and/or if Portland Blazers moves to Seattle).

Yes...although football slowly seems to be following the same direction.
The only problem I have with football is the defensive pass interference and **some** helmet to helmet calls.

The NFL is following the NBA in the sense that they want higher scoring games, thus on 4th and a mile late in the game the QB's simply throw the ball down field and hope for a pass interference call. That shit has got to stop. Defensive backs can barely touch the receivers these days. But, some refs are better than others and I've seen a lot of good "no calls" this season.

The Seahawks were gonna get moved when Ken Behring sold the team....but the fans campaigned for them to stay and kept them here...and then Paul Allen bought them...

Anything is possible...sellin "Seattle's ORIGINAL Team" is just wrong....

Only pro team(excluding the Storm...who incidentally are part of the Sonics package to leave) to win a Championship...

Not only that shit...but the tackling by the collar rule I think is bullshit. And you can barely even touch the QB now. Can't hit 'em high...can't him 'em low.

Plus the celebrating TD's rule...and now they have the taunting rule which I don't like either.

This one is iffy. This is a new rule started this year I believe, correct? So far I've seen it called three times. Two of the three I felt were bullshit calls, the third looked like it hurt. I can kind of see why they call it to protect the players but there should be some exceptions.

And you can barely even touch the QB now. Can't hit 'em high...can't him 'em low.
Yeah they are too soft on the QBs I agree. The only thing is they can be very vulnerable throwing a pass so there needs to be some sort of protection.

True & true. Can't argue there!

Celebrations & taunting is part of the game. The ONLY time I can see it a problem if they’re out there celebrating for two-three minutes and delaying the game.

It started last year...after T.O. got hurt the year before. The problem I have with it is that sometimes that's the only thing you can grab. And if they are gonna call it...be consistent with it. As far as them getting hurt...well...it's football.

The only thing that should off limits is the facemask for obvious reasons...but they do a good job of controlling that.

I can see the need to protect the QB...but this shit is ridiculous. You barely tap the helmet and they call roughing the passer. You trip and reach out to grab an ankle...roughing the passer. It's bullshit.

I agree. You knock someone out...or run over someone...you should be able to get in their freakin' face and let 'em know it.

Exactly. Or how bout when they band Brett Farves throat cut hand gesture. WTF??? That's like the NBA and when the made Dikembe Mutumbo (sp) stop doing his signature finger waggle after a blocked a shot.

Yep, the NFL is getting gay too, but not nearly as gay as the NBA. They still allow you to hit the shit out of your opponent.
