Australia is finally set to join the rest of the developed world and officially adopt an adults-only category for video games.
Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice Jason Clare has today announced that an R18+ category for video games has at last become a reality. The legislation passed the Senate without amendment earlier this evening.
“These are important reforms over 10 years in the making,” said Mr. Clare.
"The R 18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play, and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material.
"The reforms also mean that adults are able to choose what games they play within the bounds of the law."
The States and Territories will pass their own complementary legislation and the national scheme will commence on January 1 next year.
