good points! But i say if your not ready or can handle "disappointment" then this aint the profession for you.
True, but have you actually heard some people talk on this subject? Plenty are truly blind or ignore reality when it comes to this subject.
I read post in here sometimes, read post on facebook etc. and most independent artist believe their gonna somehow blow up by dropping the next project. Or think that if they continue to release albums / mixtapes etc. it's gonna create a huge buzz for them and people will start talking. Building catalog & that's a good thing, but only good if it's working for you. Being real business minded and measure the margin on what you've sold compare to the last project. If your not selling or your getting less than 50 to a 100 new numbers, your failing miserably. Grabbing at anything out there & spitting on shitty beats just for the simple fact to getting it out there is waste of time. It just makes you look like a shitty artist rather than a hungry artist / entrepreneur. Videos / youtube is the biggest craze. That's the new "mixtape" like thing for independent artist.
Don't misunderstand, I respect anybody out there trying to make it happen. It's the ego's / attitudes where the problem comes in. Personally, I don't care for superstar attitudes.
I my mind the word "famous" means worldwide fame. The majority of independent artist are regional. I had one artist tell me he wasn't a local artist because he was known in other areas LMAO! He had just dropped an album & thought he was in fact famous. I watched him slowly sink back down to earth and a look of disappointment all over his face. Yack yack yack all the talking he did about how he was this & that & didn't sell anywhere near of what was coming out his mouth.
I come along and drop the
Street Connect Soundtrack and sold more in the first two weeks with hardly any promotion than what he sold in a year with all the talking and nowhere near the money he put in to his album.
With that said, I remain the same person and don't really give two shits about what I've sold (I continue to sell steadily.) If I was to make the rest of the world support like that it'd be great! Until then I'm just like everybody else in the independent game.
I even had people say my documentary film was a negative stand in the area and trying to make us look unknown & broke. Ummmm... that's what we as independent artist truly are! And that's everywhere. It shows me a clear sign of these unknown artist thinking their famous, but they are still renting and working a regular job to make ends meet.
To me famous are artist like Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross etc. in today's Hip Hop world. Love them or hate them, they are where every independent artist wishes to be. Yet, many remain stubborn in "keeping it real" & turn around & bitch about not "blowing up."
Speaking in general...
In the end, it's where ever your content to be at in this independent music business, but please don't lie to yourself because by doing that your looking like an idiot out there and making us all look bad.
