“But it’s tied down to AT&T…” Those may be words that you’ll never hear again when it comes to the iPhone. Now, it’s not written in stone just yet, but one of Hot Hardware’s inside sources feels very confident that AT&T will lose its iPhone exclusivity during Apple’s big announcement this week. If this is true, coupled with an announcement / beta release of iPhone 4.0, Apple’s iPhone sales could skyrocket — especially since some people have avoided the iPhone like the plague strictly because of AT&T. Where will the iPhone go? Will there be an unlocked version available? We’re not quite sure, but we’ll find out soon as it’s shaping up to be a big week for Apple with a tablet announcement, iPhone 4.0 and now possibly the iPhone may finally be unshackled from AT&T’s grip. One thing to consider, however, is that if AT&T loses its exclusivity this Wednesday, who’s going to want to buy an AT&T-locked iPhone until the next generation model comes out? That alone gives us some doubt.

Good find 4Sided I was reading up on this and it looks interesting for all those iPhone people. I'll still stick with Android though just my preference.

Yeah I will too no doubt, but this would be good for people wanting an iphone but not wanting to go to AT&T and stick with their current carrier.
Rumor has it that Tmobile and Verizon are picking it up.

Looks like Apple couldn't keep out GV from their phones. They're gonna roll out a web app for it since they didn't want to approve an actual app.

http://www.macworld.com/article/145902/2010/01/voice_webapp.html

The first inkling we had that something was off between longtime friends Apple and Google came last July when Apple pulled existing third-party apps for Google’s Voice service from the App Store. Six months later, Google’s finally remedied the situation by adding a dash of HTML5 into Voice’s Web interface.

On Tuesday, Google unveiled the snazzy new interface for Google Voice for the iPhone and Palm Pre. In addition to a mobile-optimized version of your Voice inbox, you can place calls using the service (including cheap international calls), send and get text messages, and play back voicemail messages. Your Voice number will show up as the caller ID, so people can call you back there instead of on your mobile number.

As Google points out in its tutorial video, it’s a snap to add the Google Voice page to your iPhone’s Home screen, which really turns it into a viable replacement for the iPhone’s own phone service.

Of course, you’ll still need a Google Voice account in order to take advantage of the new features, so if you don’t have one yet, go ahead and request an invite. If you’re wondering what all the hubbub about Google Voice is, be sure to check out our primer on the service.

I guess there could be a good argument made for both sides since Apple is really strict with the apps they approve and Android is completely open...especially when you are security minded.

Having the iPhone has given AT&T's network tons of problems. THey were never ready for the data usage that iPhone users go through, and it crippled their network...they just werent ready.

I don't think i'll be switching to any other provider if they do lose exclusivity. I would at least wait and see how the phone does on another network..

Im hoping they cut ties with the "exclusively" for att. Isnt people jail breaking them and using them on other carriers anyways? I really hope T-Mobile picks it up cuz my 2 year contract is up in like 5 or 6 months.

in the US you can unlock it for use with T-Mobile in some instances, you cant use 3G and im not sure how the Edge usage works as far as paying for data plans.

Looks like Apple confirmed that the new iPhone will be a 4G like everyone was rumored. Question is whether any of the carriers will fully support 4G by its release or if it will be backwards compatible with 3G/Edge/CDMA (Verizon & Sprint). Sprint already talks about 4G coverage but their network isn't as big as Verizon's.

Following on from Apple’s Q1 2010 earnings that we mentioned yesterday, many of us have been wondering if Apple will unveil its new Tablet PC or the iPhone 4G at their Press Event tomorrow. However, it has been said that Steve Jobs gave a wink and hinted that it will be the tablet device that will be the big news.
According to Electric Pig, Apple COO Tim Cook also added more speculation by saying “I wouldn’t want to take away your joy and surprise on Wednesday when you see our latest creation.” This was just after Jobs announced that Apple had become a $50 billion company.
We are still not certain what the name of the tablet PC will be called yet; the three names in contention are the iSlate, iPad and iTablet. Let us know what one you prefer. It seems that Apple can do no wrong at the moment, and this latest device will only help strengthen the company while others are struggling.
Apple sales have been impressive in 2009, iPhone sales saw a 100% increase with iMac sales up by 33%. However, it was not all good, iPod sales were down 8% over the previous year, this could have something to do with Apple not launching a new model like they have with the iPhone and iMac computers.
If I were a betting man I would say that we will see the new Apple Tablet PC, a new version of the iPhone OS and also a Verizon iPhone.

T-Mobile and AT&T run off of the same towers anyways, so wouldn't be much of a benefit there.

Verizon and Sprint, from my experience get much better service than AT&T and T-Mobile. I have a Crackberry now, but been thinking about getting an iPhone for all of the apps.

If Verizon or Sprint gets the iPhone I might jump ship.
