We got our studio built, booth and all...We have been researching different products and got some help from different producers. We are only interested in vocal recordings right now:

What we have picked up so far:

-HP PC 512 MB Ram / 2.6 ghz
-Monitor Speakers
-Blue Baby Bottle Mic
-Blue Shockmount
-Blueberry Cable
-Ceiling mount for the mic

?? Our pro tools DILEMMA is between:

002r and MBox,......We went GCenter and they told us the major difference between the two was that Mbox can only record 2 tracks at a time. They went on to say that if we were just recording vocals, teh MBox would be sufficient for us and save us a ton of deneiro ????
THOSE OF YOU THAT KNOW, PLEASE SHED A LITTLE LIGHT?

Whats up man? Instead of snatching an m-box or digi 002r why not snatch a digi 001? That would save you at least $600 bucks. If you plan on doing other things (sequencing/recording music) look into the 002r. I own a 002r and right now I think the 002r is overkill for what you're trying to do. You can get a used digi 001 and a nice pre amp for the price of the digi 002r. You might get a better sound ("better"= a matter of personal opinion) that way so maybe you should think about it. The downside to the digi 001 is support. I don't know if ***future*** versions of pro tools will work with the 001 (hit the digi duc and you'll find threads about this). The guys at gc dont know what they are talking about. the pre amps are different between the two units, one unit has fire wire, one unit has multiple I/o options, one unit has usb and the list goes on. Will you import mixed down files or multi tracked sessions?

BTW who built your mic booth? Did you purchase one preassembled or did you make it yourself? I'm making one myself and I had help from a lot of acoustic engineers and studio builders. They helped with building plans, told me what materials to get etc etc etc . If your dimensions are multiples of each other (4x4x8 is an example) you might as well not have a sound booth. If your walls are NOT constructed of "leaves" of different mass you might as well not have a sound booth. What type of insulation did you use?

^^^^^ Thats your opinion and you are entitled to it. Bill Howerdel (producer for A PERFECT CIRCLE) Recorded and mixed the first album using a ***16-bit*** 888 I/O interface, a MIX Core card and two mix farm cards. The ONLY outboard gear used to record was a 737 SP (avalon). The ONLY thing that was ran through the 737 was BASS parts. The mics used consisted of HIGHER and LOWER "quality" mics than the Blue mic you own. The album hit #4 on the billboard charts when it was released. No rock group has hit higher with a debut album.

You can possibly still find this info on the net or the "A PERFECT CIRCLE" web site.

If you don't get the sound you want check your room and try mic techniques. Why blame the gear? Shit I shelled out BREAD recording (vox, guitars and some drums) and mixing material on an ssl only to have the engineer fuck it up. Because I didnt get the results I desired should I no longer use an ssl? HELL NO!

Most likely we will be importing mixed down files....We basically want to record clean vocals in a protools session, and if need be, for our bigger projects we will mail them out to be mixed at a bigger studio w/ a more experienced engineer using the pro tools data ..Thats why we were wondering if we can get by with MBOX & PROTOOLS SOFTWARE for the recording aspect of things.....
Our mic booth was built w/ r 30 insulation?, sheetrock, and some other shit...
The guys that built it are construction doods.., not sure of the size dimensions...

so basically everyone said the mbox is a piece of dung~

Yes you can get by with the m-box but what if you decide to upgrade your studio? Have you heard the m-box? You wont be doing anything on your pc that requires a lot of processing power. The only thing you'll be doing is tracking vocals and sending them out. The m-box can handle that with ease. You don't ***need*** pro tools to do what you're doing. If you want pro tools thats fine and great but you can do what you want to do in cubase or logic and still be able to import the tracks to a pro tools session. I suggest you get something besides the m-box just in case you decide you want to get a larger set up. That way you have something to build around. Digi 002r is overkill for what you're doing at this point in time. If I were in your shoes (needing to record vox ***only***) and I had $1100 to spend I would snatch a 001 with an avalon pre amp. <-------more BANG!!!!!!! For your B$U$C$K$!!!!!

You need to compare all three units and make your purchase based on current and *possible* future needs, upgrades and budget.

I'm familiar with r-30 but I used something else for insulation. The construction guys should have used Thermafiber SAFB (2 or 3 inch) on your booth but r-30 provides good insulation. As long as they used "leaves", kept holes and nails to a minimum, used dimensions that weren't multiples you're fine. It's a science to building booths. I soaked up A LOT of game and talked to A LOT of people so I could get the best STC rating my budget could provide. Did you use glass or plexiglass for a window? Better yet what are you using to get the mic in and out of the vocal booth?

:hgk:

Btw If you do snatch the 002r you will need a fire wire card. $35-$50 is the price range.

And i think there will be a hole punched to get teh mic chords in...thanks for all your info...
Yea, I think we might snatch up that mbox for now, and sell it off if we need to in the future and scoop the oo2r ... We are gonna look into preamps also... thanks partna

@Booza drop your mailing addy in my aol email addy. If these guys are construction guru's it's a 99% chance they used sheet rock screws. The question is did they seal around the screw heads with mud? Most likely. Did they use beads or "leafs"? Thats up for debate and the leaves are the most important aspect (besides dimensions) when building. Did you treat the inside of the booth yet? If so what did you use? Do you have a "floating floor" if so was neoprene used? If this stuff doesn't make sense ask the builders about it. BTW what kind of studs did you use?

MOE, THE NEVE PRE AMPS ARE THE MOST IN DEMAND PRE'S IN THE WORLD DONT FEEL BAD IF YOU DONT GET THE SAME SOUND FROM A PROTOOLS PRE, IF YOU OWN A PRE AMP THEN JUST RUN THE OUT INTO A LINE LEVEL INPUT
