This September a ban on owning military style assault weapons in the USA will be lifted. Come September 13th (I'm pretty sure that's the date, I could be wrong.) Americans 18 years and over will be able to legally purchase fully automatic rifles, which no American has been legally able to do since the Assault Weapons Act made it illegal back in 1994 for a person to manufacture, transfer or possess fulliautomatic assault weapons, such as Uzis, AK-47s, or M-16s.
However it is not just the weapons that this law applied to, as certain gun modifications were also made illegal such as flash supressors, bayonet lugs and grenade launchers. That's right, grenade launchers! It will be fully legal come September 13th to equip your assault rifle with a grenade launcher. God I'm glad to be an Australian!
When this kind of news comes around, you have to ask why? If these guns are only intended to be used for hunting animals, then what's with the overkill? If you want to go hunting deer, then surely you don't need an M-16 with grenade launcher attachment to do it. In fact if you need these kinds of weapons to hunt deer, then you are obviously totally shit at hunting and should consider trying another sport, because god knows there is nothing sporting about attacking deer with a grenade launcher. If you're an avid hunter and not just some gun nut, then you should relish the challenge of hunting using just a single shot rifle.
Basically the only concievable use I can see for these grade of guns is for hunting other humans, not animals, and even then it would only be "sporting" if the hunted was also equiped with a similiar weapon. Essentially this means that by approving the lifting of this ban, congress is essentially permitting an increase in gun-related fatalities.
So unless congress wakes up to the world of pain that it will be subjecting its constituents to and renews the ban (yeah, right!), then we'll be seeing a repeat of events such as what happened at Columbine High School a few years back. But this time with new and improved guns! Assault Weapons for everyone!!!
Just to finish things off, here's a quote by Lenny from the Simpsons, justifying his ownership of an M-16:
Lenny: Assault weapons have gotten a lot of bad press lately, but they're
manufactured for a reason: to take out today's modern super animals,
such as the flying squirrel, and the electric eel.
