...i don't think any of us can imagine what we really take for granted...sure there is corruption in the gov't, but there is everywhere...i know it sucks when you get your paycheck and you lost 15-20% to the man, but do we really understand what all that shit pays for?...it's the basic neccesitys that we all take for granted...clean water, energy (electricity), gasoline (oil), clean food, paved roads are all things regulated by the gov't...and without them, we would be some primal ass motherfuckas...trust me, i have my gripes about some of the things our country chooses to do, but we are all very blessed to have been raised in a country that can afford to spend billions of dollars on our education...and although many people view the war on drugs as a complete failure (which it is), but when the shit hits the fan, we have enough military personnel and equipment to take on the world...and in what other country do you have rights guarenteed like you do here?...i think we should all take a step back and think about the ways many people live around the world (cuba, middle east, india), what their laws are like, how their people are treated (women's rights, child labor), and be thankful we were born here and that the 15-20% isn't more like 50%

Our governments original purpose (to guarantee freedom) would have ensured for the greatest possible way of life. However, politicians loosely translate the Constitution to serve their purpose and in doing so bastardized it. All of our rights now have exceptions and extenuating circumstances. We have the freedom of speech, but not to swear in public. We have the right to assemble, but not to loiter. We have the right to our own religion, but can't have a "Christmas Dance", we have to have a "Holiday Dance". I would much rather live in a much less developed society that allows individuals to make their own choices and live their own lives. I believe that restricting us takes away from our own happiness, even when the government acts for our own protection. I get arrested if i'm not wearing a seatbelt in my car? Fuck that. Who else does that affect but me? I see what you're saying, and you do have a valid point. Yes, in comparison to Cuba, the Middle East, and India, we do live amazing lives. We are a hegemonous society. We are a military, diplomatic, and economic superpower. Only the Romans, British, Egyptians and a few others have ever achieved the power and glory that our nation has. But the price we pay is too much. We give up "some" of our freedoms in order to ensure that everyone is treated equally and justly. I have a great love for this country, and if anybody from another country talked shit on the US, i would fuck them up. But as far as the government goes, i absolutely hate its backward corruption. The problem with politics is politicians.

I agree Naptown317.

I criticize our government all the time, but I do sit back and look at the possitives as well, and how things are worse off in most countries. some people on the other hand are so negative they can't recognize any possitives in our govt, as demonstrated by a few in this thread.

Well the midle east, india and cuba arent democratic. They have no choice what they do. We are, but not enough people stand up. Look at how excited other countries are to vote on shit compared to us.

I do not like most of the government, but i have had few real personal contacts with it thet i was bad. (to me).

Power corrupts power. I hate the United States gov't and its power structure. There is no justice if you are like me, say a poor black college student in a redwood town, who cant AFFORD to BUY thier justice, the same way rich elites do. For instance, i got this fellonious ticket (the officer refferreed to the document as a "speeding citation"). How about a\he wrote my name, addy, soc sec, down all correct, but happened to "mistakenly" write the wrong letter for my race. Another discrepancy I noticed was that accoeding tot he ticket, I was due in court at 0:00 AM.
Now, I had to take a final on the day I was origionally scheduled to go to court, so I got it changed. The second time I was due was my third day fo class of this summer semester and I had a project to do that particular class day, so I got it rescheduled again. How about I just paid the damn ticket, i tried to talk to the judge and he told me to come to court to contest the ticket, I treid talking to the police cheif, he wasnt trying to hear it. I knw that the skinheaded dummy that gave me the ticket was just fulfilling his monthly quota...

I agree~ Besides, you can complain all you want, there's nothing you can do about it.

I think the more money you have the more freedom you have. Take a look at the legal system, it totally benefits the rich. A poor man with a public defender doesnt stand a chance in court. ON the other hand if you are wealthy and can afford the best Lawyers money can buy you have a much better chance in court. We all have the same basic freedoms, but from there things are very unequal, and only the rich benefit.

exactly but come on now the rich worked hard to get where they are,(finishing high school, graduating college, getting into the work place) while the poor drop out of school work a shitty job (or dont work at all) and then blame the rich for their situation. No matter what everyone when they start out has the same benefits, you can go to school and learn or you can drop out, you CAN get a scholorship to many good colleges and universitys if you dont have the money to pay for them. the Only thing that seperates the rich from the poor is ambition
