An argument at Doyle Park led to a stabbing Wednesday afternoon and Santa Rosa police officers closed off the park while looking for a suspect.
One man was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with at least one stab wound to his chest, said Sgt. Rich Celli. The wound was not believed to be life threatening.
A passerby who saw two people running through the park and heard there had been a stabbing called police at about 2 p.m.
Several officers and detectives responded. The two men involved were believed to be transients and officers headed for nearby homeless camps to try and find the suspect.
While a few people may have seen the crime, dozens of people were in the park and saw at least one man running away, Celli said.
The victim was stabbed while near picnic tables by the park entrance.
Officers converged on the park not long before the end of the school day at Doyle Park Elementary School, which adjoins the old Santa Rosa park.
Unaware of the violence, some parents picking up their kindergarteners had planned to go to the park for some after-school time under the shady old oak trees.
But they were deterred when they saw a police car blocking the entrance.
“Oh wow. In the middle of the day?” said mom Cat Anthony, after hearing about the stabbing. “We were going to go after school for an hour,” she said as she walked son Conrad, 5, toward their car instead of the park.
“We’re very disappointed. We’ll probably just go home,” Anthony said.
