Valuev vs Chagaev... It was a good fight.

This Saturday ‘The Russian Giant’ Nikolai Valuev, 46-0 (34), defends his WBA title for the fourth time against number one contender Ruslan ‘The White Tyson’ Chagaev, 22-0-1 (17), of Uzbekistan. Valuev, a man who seems to be bringing out the worse in some members of boxing fandom, is fighting against a legitimate contender who should solidify his claim is oft contested claim that he is indeed one of the best heavyweights in the world.

Ruslan Chagaev is not Tyson, to be perfectly honest he is much more like Tua; however he does pack the one punch
power that people love. Add to this his skill and granite chin and you have one of the toughest fighters to beat at heavyweight. Honestly I could see Chagaev beating other top heavies such as Samuel Peter, Shannon Briggs, Oleg Maskaev and Sultan Ibragimov.

Chagaev has proven that he belongs at the top with wins over John Ruiz and the hard-hitting granite chinned Vladimir Virchis. Now he faced the biggest challenge of his career in Valuev. The 6’1” and 230 pound Chagaev will be around a foot shorter and one-hundred pounds lighter then the champion. Given Valuev’s chin, strength, underestimated skill and stamina one has to wonder how Chagaev will ever overcome the giant. Obviously Chagaev’s best shot is to rip Valuev’s body early and viciously in the hopes of slowing Valuev down and nailing his chin later in the fight. Chagaev doesn’t have the footwork to box from the outside, but he has the power and combination punching to try and chop Valuev down from the inside.

Valuev knows how to approach this fight. He is not only a huge strong man, but he is also a smart man who is adept at wearing out his opponents and sticking to a plan. He has possibly the longest and one of the hardest jabs in boxing, which is complimented by a heavy right hand and an underutilized uppercut. He should fight Chagaev like he did Paolo Vidoz. Both being roughly the same height and weight, Valuev should utilize the jab and right will coming forward, and mix uppercuts to the head as well as hooks and uppercuts to the body. If he can press forward like he did against Vidoz he might just be able to sink Chagaev late.

I tend to think Chagaev’s chin, skill and power will allow him to make it to the final bell, but that Valuev’s size, skill and stamina will be too much for Ruslan. Look for Valuev to win this fight via decision.
