Hispanic Doc Series Voces to Air on Public TV in September
LOS ANGELES, August 4: The 13-part series Voces, from Latino Public Broadcasting, is set to air on public TV stations across the U.S. in September as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Hosted by Edward James Olmos, the series is composed of documentaries and musical specials that spotlight the diversity of Latin-American culture. Episodes include The Bronze Screen, on actors such as Rita Moreno, Anthony Quinn and Jimmy Smits; From Mambo to Hip Hop with Latin jazz legends Eddie Palmieri and Ray Barretto; Pancho Gonzalez: Warrior of the Court on the tennis pro; and The Republic of Baseball, about the first Dominican baseball players to play in the Major League. Other episodes will cover issues like immigration (The Guestworker), gangs (Nuestra Familia) and suburban ethnicity (Recalling Orange County).
Luca Bentivoglio, the executive director of Latino Public Broadcasting, states, “We see Voces as the first national public television series to truly show the broad spectrum of Latino influence in America, one that goes far beyond the one-note coverage of Latinos seen, especially lately, in the media.”
The series is distributed by American Public Television, and will run through November 25. Latino Public Broadcasting is a non-profit organization funded by The Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Its mission is to support the “development, production, post-production, acquisition and distribution of non-commercial educational and cultural television that is representative of Latino people, or addresses issues of particular interest to Latino Americans.”
