I just switched from Windows 7 64bit to Ubuntu Linux 10.10 and man I am loving this OS and did I mention its free!

4GB of memory and idle its using less than 700MB vs windows 2GB. All my hardware(Graphics Card, Wireless keyboard and mouse and printer and sound) was detected and worked right after OS install, no drivers needed.

Just wondering if anyone else has had any experience with this OS and what you thought?

I have it on a partition with my netbook... the 10.10 remix version. I like it a lot.

Only think is "specialty programs" for video/audio ect that are standerd dont work on it. When it comes to like open office, websurfing and stuff it kicks ass, and is super safe, u dont need virus protection running ( all loop holes are patched - thks to open source)

If your looking to getting into programing or networking, getting to know linux is basically a must. I been dabbling with C++ and Python, and loaded linux just for that - I think if software companies released software compatible to linux (not virtual boxs) it would basiclly kill mac and win os systems imo... its fucking stable as hell

Ubuntu is cool to mess with, but it just sucks using shit like Wine to run most of my programs and stuff, I had a partition for it but got rid of it cause I never found myself even getting on it to fuck around anymore. Like Nato said though if software companies released shit for Linux my Windows 7 would be gone and i'd be using Ubuntu regularly.

ya I agree with "Specialty Programs" not being compatible but for the most part it does what I need it to do. Im big on music and movies and not so much into gaming so this is great for me and all my stuff is backed up on an external drive so im good there.

this video will give nerds a boner

haha thats the same video that made me want to check it out

it really does a lot and i did enjoy most of it, especially the cube for different desktops and all the graphical enhancements....very fun and awesome and with more support it could be a real contender in the PC market, they need to fix the driver installation process...none of which is really connect and it installs by itself....

i was fucking lost for days trying to get the correct patched drivers just for a wifi card....and then installing with the series of commands and prompts...too much work...other than that being my main issue, i would check it out again if they could make it more first time user friendly

System --> Administration --> Hardware Drivers

select the ones you want and activate them

alot of the drivers are not allowed to be distributed with the operating system but the source code is available. Thus activating the driver will go out and fetch the source code, compile the code into binary format, and modify the system to use the drivers.

you need to activate certain drivers to get some of teh compiz effects like 3d cube desktop and what not.

it is truly amazing how far this shit has came. if you think it's hard now try editing your own X config files and compiling kernel modules/drivers by hand... lol

I have both have a dual boost for Win7 and Ubuntu Maverick. I love Ubuntu way faster and safer then any other OS. I never go online with my Windows I only use windows for software for graphics/music/videos etc. But I only go online with Ubuntu since you won't get a virus.

So when my computer starts this is how it looks

Download this here http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer

So what you do when download Ubuntu is you choose if you want Ubuntu to get rid of Windows or install it side by side. Choose side by side and choose how much of your hard drive you want to dedicate to Ubuntu. It's the best way to run a PC IMO. You can also use Ubuntu to get rid of virus in windows as well. So if you ever have a crazy virus that won't even let windows boot just keep a Ubuntu live cd handy.

This is the website where I learn how to do some dope ass shit http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/

They are plenty of Youtube videos on Linux and the online community is really helpful as well.

Open Source FTW all around.

Well it all depends what you want to do with it. Luckily Ubuntu is really small in size compared to Win and thats why is so much faster. I would recommend at the min 30GB just to play it safe.

ubuntu is the shyt im still gettin used with it, i run the remix version on my netbook, and it runs quick, seams to drain the batt life a bit quicker but that could just be the batt.
once you figure out how to use the command prompt to install stuff it gets real interesting. im still tryna figure out how to use conky for widgets and such, and while rythmbox isnt as visually appeasing as itunes it gets the job done.
software companies should def look into supporting linux i feel there'd be a lot of money to be made
