San Diego police investigate a report of a fight in which two people were stabbed, one fatally, at Kate O. Sessions Memorial Park in Pacific Beach.
SAN DIEGO – One man was stabbed to death and another was wounded about midnight Wednesday after they confronted a large group of people at Kate O. Sessions Memorial Park in Pacific Beach.
The two victims, who were possibly accompanied by another person, drove into the park on Soledad Road sometime before 12 a.m., according to San Diego Police homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney.
They pulled up to a group of 18 to 30 people and exchanged some words, then drove a short distance away, parked and walked back toward the group, according to witnesses.
"From there it escalated pretty quickly," Rooney said.
One of the men, thought to be in his early 20s, was stabbed in the chest in the fight that broke out. The other man, also in his 20s, was stabbed in the arm, Rooney said.
The car they arrived in was driven away and all of the people involved in the fight also left the park. Police said witnesses found the victim who was mortally wounded lying face up in the parking lot. They called police and tried to help the two men.
Paramedics arrived and performed CPR, but he died at 12:25 a.m., Rooney said. The other man was taken to a hospital and was expected to survive.
Homicide detectives were still in the park investigating at daybreak. A deputy medical examiner arrived about 6:30 a.m.
The park is closed at 10 p.m., but, Rooney said, the gate was open. He said investigators don't know what the group of people was doing at the park.
Police asked anyone with information about the crime to call the department's homicide unit at (619) 531-2293 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS (8477).
