Meningitis is contagious. It can be spread by coming into contact with an infected person's respiratory secretions. Small children who are not yet toilet trained and their caretakers may also spread the virus. Not everyone who is infected with meningitis will actually get the disease. Therefore, it is not always obvious when you are at risk for infection. When it comes to personal hygiene, common sense can help prevent the spread of viral meningitis. This may include:
- washing hands often
- disinfecting surfaces with chlorine bleach mixed with water
Because
viral meningitis is caused by the enterovirus, it is important to note that this virus is active in the summer and early fall

Symptoms
Symptoms of bacterial meningitis usually develop suddenly, while those of viral meningitis may develop suddenly or gradually over a period of days. For example, the symptoms of viral meningitis after mumps may take several days or weeks to develop.
The most common symptoms of either form of meningitis include:
- Fever.
- Severe and persistent headache.
- Stiff and painful neck, especially when trying to touch the chin to the chest.
- Vomiting.
- Confusion and decreased level of consciousness.
- Seizures.
Other symptoms of meningitis include:
- Sluggishness, muscle aches and weakness, and strange feelings (such as tingling) or weakness throughout the body.
- Eye sensitivity and eye pain from bright lights.
- Skin rash.
- Dizzy spells.
