alright, i have a 1999 chevy s-10 V6 4.3L and about 2 months ago my truck overheated cuz the thermestat was all clogged with some sort of residue. so i replaced it and while i was at it i flushed my radiator and had it rodded(spellin?) and put new antifreeze and and cleaned out the engine where the antifreeze runs wit some distilled water. but now it seems to vibrate a lil when im either parked and the engine is on or when i stop at a light or sumthin. and then after a while the "CHECK ENGINE" light comes on inside. can sumone help me out with this? i want to learn how to do my own shit im my truck. :hurt:

did you put regular anti-freeze in it?

Most chevys after about 94 need a product called Dex-cool with their coolant. If the residue your talking about was a orange/brown color then you need dex-cool. GM swears by this stuff but their are tons of lawsuits out there stating Dex-cool has fucked their cars/trucks up.

you need to have that light checked out...it may or may not be related...it all depends on how long you drove it when it overheated...if you kept driving it, you possibly messed up something in the engine, but like i said, it may not be related...have the check engine light checked out first...it could be alot of things that triggered the light, but it sounds like you might have some sort of misfire....

you may have burned up your engine, depending on how hot it got. If any thing like the head gasket was messed up because of the heat, then you are SOL.

Yea i used prestone dex-cool and the residue was exactly what you said. the dex-cool fucked up the thermestat and we just had the coolant/antifreeze changed 1.5 years bfore so it wasnt old. can i sue? is there anyways i could jump on the bandwagon? lol

you know if you head gasket is blown if you check the oil and the underside of the cap has a mayonaise looking goo on it.
does this still show up even if i changed the oil? and if the head gasket bust. what could i do? do i have to get a new engine?

IF YOUR OIL LOOKS LIKE CHOCOLATE MILK SHAKE YOUR HEAD GASKET IS MORE LIKELY THE PROBLEM AND JUS NEEDS TO BE REPLACED , NO NEW ENIGINE NEEDED BUT YOU NEED TO CHANGE ALL THE OIL CAUSE ITS NO GOOD ANYMORE.

and then after a while the "CHECK ENGINE" light comes on inside

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON WHEN A SENSOR OR SYSTEM IS MALFUCTIONIN. YOU NEED A SCANTOOL TO GET THE CODE THAT WILL TELL YOU THE REASON WHY THE LIGHT CAME ON. IM THINKIN ITS THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR THAT REACTED TO THE COOLANT CHANGE, BUT CAN BE SOMETHIN AS SIMPLE AS THE RADIATOR CAP NOT KEEPIN PRESSURE ANYMORE. BUT IM JUST GUESSIN, YOU NEED A SCANTOOL THAT AUTO TECHS HAVE THEY COST $100+...

if your head gasket blew, its gonna cost big bucks....VERY BAD.

there 150 sites online, do a google search for online auto help, or online car help or online auto diagnosis

the mayo....it would show if you changed the oil....its from air or someting gettin in the mix....just look for the mayo...if you dont see it (its hella obvious) then thats not it.

alright...this is what i'm assuming...

you drove your car for some time when it overheated and you possibly did blow your head gaskets...the best way to tell if it's your head gasket would be by pulling the oil dip stick and checking to see if it looks like coffee and milk...another way could be checking the oil cap, but sometimes the cap will build a little bit of that "mayo" stuff and it's really not a good indication of a blown head gasket...

another thing that might have happen as a result could be that you cracked a head...meaning that the heads got too hot and cracked...now this could be a reason why your check engine light comes on...if the cylinder cracked and coolant leaks into the spark plug port, it will cause a misfire and it will eventually trigger the check engine light...that little shake at stops could be the misfire...coolant is soaking the spark plug...

it seems by the way you are explaining the situation that you cracked a head and coolant is leaking into the spark plug....a way to check it is to simply look at the coolant resevoir tank...if you notice that you're low on coolant all the time, then the coolant is leaking from somewhere on the engine...if you need to add coolant or if the bottle is empty, then it's a good sign that theres a leak somewhere...

there are a few possibilties, but the most common with your description is the above 2...now to get a diagnosis, at a dealership will cost you about 120 bucks...this is just to hook up the scanner and retrive the codes in the memory and finding out exactly what component is failing....it could be something related to the overheating, but at the same time it could be something totally different...your best bet is to take it to a dealer and paying for the diagnosis...you could take it to an independent shop, but sometimes they don't have access to recalls or technical service bulletins that might be a quick and cheap fix...if it's a common problem , the dealer will most likely carry the part and be able to have the car for you the same day...but start with the diagnosis and find out exactly what the concern is and then decide if it's something you can do on your own...
