I've played drums since the age of 9 so usually I do drums first just out of habit...and no, I'll do a COMPLETE drum track before moving on....rarely I'll add some percussion later. But sometimes I will do the melody etc first but not much of the time...

First rule to me of beats: If the drums suck, people will skip the track

i fucks with the melody line first then add to it,usually the drums, and then ill rearange the melody a lil better to fit the drums, then go back to the melody and vice versa, then build from there, im now getting more into creating bridges in my songs and more momentum or like build up type things, dont kno how to explain that

i do it two ways...the way i usually do it is start wit a drum beat like kick, clap, bass,hi hat...then and mess around on the key board for a melody usually a synth...then i add sound fx or whatever i think makes the beat a lil better...then i piece the song together edit shit delete shit...then im basically done...

the second way is i get a dope melody in my head and i go hop on reason to record it and either i finish the beat there wit all the other shit or i come back to it later wit some more ideas

It depends and thats probably why it takes me a long time to put shit together.

If I got a sample, i'll start with the sample first cuz the drums may not match right if you start with them in that case.

Starting off with a melody in my experience is usually a bad idea and causes me to back track and redo this redo that until I've been on the same shit for hours but sometimes it works fine.

Starting with the drums is usually the best bet, just make sure you know exactly what you want to do with everything else

Latley I've made a gang of startup beats and havn't bothered arranging them into full length tracks, just being lazy i guess. Good for putting together a sampler disc though

Well, the majority of mobb music sounds as if it is the lower tempo range, so if you can't drop below 95bpm something is wrong. I say with mobb music two things are very crucial. The drum pattern and sounds have to be really good and the bassline needs to be hard. Go listen to some Studio Tone, Ant Banks, Khayree and Mike Mosley and you'll see what I'm talking about. Better yet, take it back even further. Go and listen to the guys that influenced their production. Listen to some George Clinton and P-Funk (parliment funkadelic, p funk all stars etc), Bootsy, Sly, Con funk shun, Brothers Johnson and a lot of 60's/70's FUNK.

@ heresy, yeah i dont kno what it is, its like once i hit below the 95 tempo everything sounds all wierd to me....i dont know what it is its like it sounds very VERY generic sounding (that prolly dont make no sense..) i just tried to make a beat at 95 an shit sounded cool, but it just needs a knockin ass bassline now...anybody got any good suggestions for a thumpin bassline on Reason 2.5??

I really don't think there's any right or wrong way to start. It just all depends on how you like to approach things. I do usually try to start first with what I feel is the most important aspects of that particular song I'm working with like the bassline, main melody, chords, and drums to get a rhythm going. Then after lay down some other sounds like strings, leads and what not to fill the track up. I suppose just start first with what you think is the most important or with what will give you the most difficulty. For example, you got a sick bassline in your head, lay that down first, then immediatly follow by adding in a drum beat or just work inconjunction with a drum loop. Like most have said though, probably starting off first with a drum loop is your best choice, that way you got some instant rhythm to work with.
