Actually there was a interview last year with Eric Lempel, Sony’s Director of Network Operations said "things change" and that they may make people pay for PSN, but not for the core-features.. Sorta like Xboxs Silver and Gold memberships.

I jus wouldn't be so confident in it.. It's obvious Playstation has to do something, and it'd be in there best interest to beef up PSN and make you pay for the new features.. Shit i'd jump right onboard and cop a membership... I'd be a happy man :)
having free online play is very important to many gamers who feel they shouldn't have to pay for online play, it's an important selling point to sony. Sure, they may have some sort of "Gold" or Platinum membership that have certain perks or what have you, but they will always have free online play.

i agree, sony takes pride in having free service and has been a major selling point from the start. dont think they would ever go back on that

better competition

party chat- the ability to talk to anybody through the headset regardless of what game is being played. i can be playing ufc and be choppin it up with my boy that is playing madden

more detailed friends list- i can not only tell what game they are playing but exactly what they are doing. "madden 09 franchise game 3rd qtr 3:17 left 28-17". so i dont have to play a guessing game on when they are done or call them and bug them about joining my game

great exclusive DLC- both fallout 3's and GTA's DLC is amazing. even better than the original game

extremely more reliable connection (granted thats from my own expereince,as all of these are i guess)

great community games- 1 vs 100 is a beast right now. everybody wants on that shit.

good community events- being able to play with developers of games or musical aritsts. every week they have events where they allow you to play with famous people. not my cup of tea but pretty cool regardless. even outside of that they will set up events in order to get people to play certain games. like they have music mondays where they try to get everybody on rock band or guitar hero. so those games get more traffic on those certain days. you know to play rock band on mondays cause everybody is going to be on,etc.

streaming videos right from the dashboard- this is something i just recently got into but i am loving it. there is always a bunch of strategy videos, videos of upcoming titles. you just click them and they stream right there full screen. i have got some cool achievment tips of some of those videos lately

im sure there are tons of people that could care less about this shit, and i am pretty sure they going to post right now and say so. truth is, i dont even use all of these functions all the time, but the fact they are at my disposal is the great part about xbox live. they thought of everything you would want from a online experience
