LOL lets be honest folks.. Erybody is dropping mixtapes, but only a few artist are actually droppin albums... As far as no competition, u gotta be either blind or biased if u dont think that Sidewayz has droped some classics... imma keep it 100, Mitchy duz it was by far if not the best mixtape then a coin flip between _____________ you fill in the blanks..

which ones were albums? it was to my understanding that they were all mixtapes... (eastrippin was supposedly songs thrown together, south east streets was a mixtape, big june called flamed up a mixtape on the mixtape, cee wee's shit had hella radio beats so i just called it that, junks was a mixtape and so was mitchy duz it) but if im wrong, exscuse me...

as far as eastrippin, i was raised (cant say born, was born in la mesa) in the east, but i cant say that makes me biased...i just thoroughly enjoyed it. i know there was no official album dropped, and alot of people have different consgs on they cd in comparison to someone elses cd, so i just call it a mixtape cuz thats prolly what it best fits... now had i heard the entire eastrippin CD when i was younger, i miught have had a different opinion on it. but i think 50cal slid it to me in liek 2006 and shit, so ..it did what it did as far as classic mixtapes, it was good to hear some of my old homies rapping. but if thats considered an album lemme know. and i know itll take this shit to a wrong turn....so if it does..lets just ignore that one...haha

i do understand if people dont put that on they favorites due to the .....content....but im pretty nuetral in that....thats the great thing about music tho u know? we all experience it at different times in our lives while going through different things...theres no true winner.

what exactly is the difference between a compilation and a mixtape?

a mixtape compiles songs, am i wrong?

and technically..im sure the songs put on eastrippin were out in the hood before it was compiled on eastrippin....which was never a official release to begin with, right?

eh fuck it...compilation, mixtapes...you call it coop...thats your job...i dont get paid on that shit...apparently the line blurred when money became an issue. (EG: niggas making compilations and calloing them mixtapes, but theres no mixing)

wtf its 4:00 im overtime. im out

shit you may be right gas..

imo i always thought mixtapes where different from compilations i always thought a dj hosted a mixtape and a compilation was an album compiled with songs from different artist wit no dj maybe one of the o.g's like 50cal or Big Frizzle can clarify it for us...

and the original east trippin cd was ment to be a compilation. as far as a official release no it never hit the store copies were burned with a below average album cover and sold in the streets...

yeah, coop thats why my opinion on 'mixtapes' at first was like 'what the fuck is a SD mixtape?' because to my knowledge a mixtape meant it was mixed....like beat junkies, mixmaster spade, dj fingaz, dj rectangle, dr dres rhodium mixtapes, shit like that...but im getting up there in age and i realize that the idea of a 'mixtape' has changed severely when people like DJ clue made their way into the game...it seemed like from then on a mixtape was just as much a compilation as a compilation was...and as west coasters sort of went along with that, like a dj hosting and it just being compiled songs....really i cant count too many mixtapes in sd...atall..if i use the true definition of a mixtape..id like to say that a mixtape has all unreleased songs? but cd's like dj junks dope fiction had songs that were released, and it was mixed so ill consider it a mixtape...

maybe part of what makes a mixtape is like...when an artist is solely looking for promotion? like the album before the album, kinda? all them lil wayne mixtapes. i guess in a way it compiles songs but being that its only one artist, its not a compilation..

i dunno..i have a fuckin headache now..thanks sonny bo =/

i guess eastrippin is more of a compilation, youre right. i was thinking more along the lines of 'put all these songs on one cd and call it a day' ...kinda like these lazy mixtapes nowadays.

LOL.. my bad folks. I feel u though 100%. The ideals of mixtapes have changed significantly. IMO today niggaz is like fuck payin a dj to host yo mixtape cause that aint gonna guarantee no sells or no spins... mixtapes now usually have a artist showcasing their talents on released industry beats, and sometimes slide a few originals in the mix. I didn't have no dj on my mixtapes because i didnt want any stigmas that come along wit fuckin wit a specific Dj.. I was like i want niggaz to get a bar of me to get a bar of me, not the nigga hostin me, feel me..

^^^ Yeah Gas the idea of a mixtape has changed. I wouldn't consider Easttrippn, or South East Streets a mixtape..more of a compilation....But shit done changed its hard to say....I say if you have original material...and you dont have a DJ either presenting it, mixing it, or shouting through it..its not really a mixtape....Mitchy Slick-Mitchy-duz it was a mixtape...and one of the few ive enjoyed..in a long time.
I have some of them roadium era mixtapes on tape still. The megamixes was what i was getting them for. In the mid to late 80's a mixtape could be a mix of songs someone through on a tape. Also D.J's started cutting and scratching and mixing the songs. At this time being rap was not mainstream you could purchase these tapes that had singles that had not been in stores yet...so you always wanted the freshest shit like Craig Mack ( Flava in your ear) in about 86-87 he went by MC EZ and troop and had a dope song called " Get retarded" with out the mixtape you would never have the song as they never put an album out. In the 90's DJ's like Clue, Ron G. Stan Strong,Dirty Harry, etc was flooding the market with exclusives which was hot cause you got shit like freestyles and new songs that aint came out yet...Started seeing more blend tapes and C.D's ..where the Dj takes a Hip Hop beat and throws on an old school R & B acapella and shit like that (my favorite Mr. Rello & Jadel) Although some of these mixtapes were merely a compilation of songs they was mixtapes because the Artists were not really involved....then came the 50 cent era in late 90's he flooded the market and this helped his career...beeing most rappers are lazy by nature and have the imagination of a mosquito they tried and copy the same formula, and then the market was saturated with shit..every rapper wanting a deal. Now its The DJ so and so presents such and such, many songs are already available or have been on other mixtapes..and also readily available for free online..every now and again there may be a great Mixtape..or C.D but the fabric of cloth that is hip hop has deteriorated and the value has depreciated.
So my initial response when i seen this thread....whats to debate about a mixtape in 2008? i almost feel sorry..like when there is gonna be a pic of the San Diego hip hop scene....mimicking the XXL or Source pic with rappers who have actually accomplished something, or the award show that recognizes talent but also gives credit to those who have accomplished really nothing to be proud of....dont get me wrong there are a few hard working artists in dago and i tip my hat, but most of em aint really accomplished anything..although there are a few who have some bigger shits in the works..the possibilities are there but until I see a soundscan with some dago artists or a video on a network or something a lil bigger then selling a few handfulls of C.D.s then there aint shit to celebrate in that area...I believe too many artists do not have a good plan, and many are working a blueprint that has expired....
