HBO’s Davis: Ward-Dawson Gets Pay-Per-View Treatment

By Ryan Maquiñana

HBO Sports vice president of programming Kery Davis commented on the network’s decision to treat the upcoming Sept. 8 super middleweight title tilt between Andre Ward and Chad Dawson as “worthy of a mega-fight.”

We’re doing a ‘24/7’ show that will premiere on August 25th. It’s only going to be one installment this time, but that’s not all,” Davis told BoxingScene.com. “They already shot a ‘Face-Off,’ and then we’re doing ‘Two Days’ with Andre Ward.

“We’re doing all the types of things that we do for a pay-per-view-type fight, and I think this fight fits the bill even if it’s just on regular HBO.”

As Davis announced on the dais during Monday’s presser in Oakland, the prefight buildup will cast the magnifying glass over both training camps for the latest installment of the award-winning “24/7” series—one that is usually reserved for HBO’s high-profile pay-per-view events.

With a current dearth of American fighters capable of driving a pay-per-view capable of garnering six-figure buys, it has become evident that HBO would like to groom the new crop of crossover idols.

“I agree with you, and look at this fight. Look at the landscape of boxing right now,” he said. “You have the top 175-pounder in the world against the top 168-pounder in the world. Whoever emerges as the winner in this fight will be in his prime, and I think the winner will become a superstar in the sport.”

Davis also addressed the bout’s detractors, many of whom have claimed that the matchup will be more of a tactical chess match than a crowd-pleasing war fought at a torrid pace.

“A writer told me when this fight was made that that he didn’t know about the styles of the two guys meshing together, but I told him that I’m not worried about that,” he said. “When you put two guys at this level against each other, all you need to know is that each of these guys would be favored against everybody in the world under 175 pounds.

“For that reason alone, that’s why boxing isn’t just a rumble sport, it’s a science sport. When you put two great athletes together like this, you never know what’s going to happen, but I just want to see who wins.”

Davis event hinted at the possibility of a trilogy if the fighters can rise to the occasion.

“Fights make stars, and if they get involved in a rivalry, for example, this is where stars grow from,” Davis said. “People always talk about how basketball was greatest when the [Los Angeles] Lakers played the [Boston] Celtics, or right now in football, when the New England Patriots play the [New York] Jets, or the Patriots against the Indianapolis Colts for the rest of the world before that.

“Maybe this is such a great fight that we see it three times, and both guys emerging as stars because of it. I think this has the potential to be that kind of fight for them, but in the boxing world, it’s not marketing that makes the stars, it’s the fights that make the stars.”

The premium cable network has seen quite a few changes since Ken Hershman took the helm of HBO Sports, from new programming like “The Fight Game” and “Two Days” to production changes, namely televising fighter meetings with the broadcast team in between rounds.

“We’re going to keep pushing the envelope,” Davis said. “I think one of the things that we’re learning is that people need to learn who these athletes are. They need to see them in their natural habitat.”

Davis elaborated on the personal touch that is necessary to cultivate a star.

“One thing about this sport when I grew up was I had a personal stake in what Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali did because I felt like I knew them,” Davis said. “I felt like if I saw them in the street, I could run up to them and hug them and say, ‘Hey man,’ because they were a friend in my head.

“That’s what we’re trying to do here. In this case, one of the things we’re trying to do is get them more exposure to their fan base. That’s where the fans begin to attach themselves.”

hats off to each fighter, they are both risking a lot just to fight the best. take notes Pac & Floyd!

I'm also really surprised that Dawson is not only dropping down a weight class (no catchweight! ) but that he's fighting Ward in his own backyard in Oakland. either he's that confident or he done fucked up.

stylistically this is a very interesting match up. dawson has the height and a big reach advantage. will be interesting to see how Ward deals with him. I'm guessing he's going to try to force his inside game and make it as rough and nasty as possible.

Ward has much more to lose in this fight, his titles and 0 are on the line. Dawson is still the 175 champ win lose or draw. the ball is in Wards court glad he accepted the challenge. This will be a good fight! They both have great skills and this will be a close match but I'm giving the edge to Andre Ward, hes just stronger mentally imo

I got some nice seats too, cant wait!

Going to this fight. Dope matchup. I really can't call this fight, but I'm rooting for SOG, no doubt.

The Oracle is the only place in the world where I've attended a rave, basketball game, UFC fight, and a boxing match. LOL

At this point u expect Ward to dominate every fighter he fights and if he doesn't its a shocker. Dawson will show his true heart and bow out of the fight when it gets to tough for him

People are selling Dawson very short in this fight. To me it's a 50/50 fight, but at 168lb I give Ward the upperhand. If Ward beats Chad Dawson he's #2 P4P on my list. Froch then Dawson is good run of top rated fighters at 168lb and 175lb. Two skilled boxers in their primes Ward great inside fighting and tuffness against Dawson's jab and long distant combo punching. I'm ready for this fight..

Dawson was mentally weak but after the two B-Hop fights he's a warrior now. In the 2nd fight against B-Hop, Chad got hit with every trick in the B-Hop drity book of boxing and kept his head together. Remember Dawson was fighting the a nasty cut from a B-Hop headbutt, and he still boxed beautifully. Ward is going to bring the fight to Chad all night, but I think Chad can take it. Can Ward handle the hand and foot speed of Dawson, because Ward has never fought a fighter faster then Chad. Skills vs Skills I can't wait to see who wins and how they win..

I would probably say number 3 especially if Martinez beats Chavez Jr.. I would have Martinez number 2 and Ward number 3. Then maybe we get a mega fight between Martinez & Ward!!!!!!! That would be bananas and I wouldnt know who to root for haha. Got Em!!

I think this fight is going to really show what Dawson is made of mentally. With the Hopkins fight he had something to prove and I think he felt disrespected by Hopkins so he went in prepared. With fighting Ward, he's showing that he isn't ducking anyone, is confident (fighting an undefeated champ in his own back yard) and I think he's gonna try to outbox Ward and really utilize his speed and keep Ward out with his reach/jab.

I'm stuck in the middle with this one so I'm going with draw/too close to call/no idea or Ward by decision (give him the edge because he's better mentally.)

ward us like a mini Hopkins, I fully expect him to make this a rough nasty fight. 47 year old hopkins did give dawson some problems, although clearly losing. younger and in his prime ward should beat dawson in my eyes, especially with his inside game where dawson lacks a bit. only question is the size and dawsons much longer arms, could be difficult to get in there.

and ward knows how to use his head as a weapon just like bhop, don't be surprised to see dawson cut up.

DAWSON'S BROTHER AIRS OUT DIRTY LAUNDRY

By John McCormick

"CHAD DON'T DO ANYTHING FOR HIS FAMILY"

World light heavyweight champion "Bad" Chad Dawson is scheduled to move down in weight to challenge world super middleweight champion Andre Ward on September 8th. The bout will be broadcast live on HBO from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA. With a little more than six weeks before fight night, both men have begun training camp. While Ward's camp has been rather quiet, Dawson's team has already began to stir up a lot of noise. Dawson's brother Jermain recently contacted Boxingtalk to express disgust for his brother. Apparently, the two brothers were close for some time but recently had a major disagreement, leaving Jermain Dawson resentful. "Yeah, we had a falling out in camp. Chad is my blood. He is my brother but he is doing a lot of stuff that just isn't right" said Jermain Dawson.

"Chad is up there in camp and he just ain't focused right now. That eye of the tiger isn't there anymore. He is an elite fighter but if he don't get serious, Ward is going to beat him. Chad is up there with all of his family... enjoying himself, and is not focused on training. I can tell, I have been around him for a lot of camps, and he isn't focused for this one."

As the conversation continued the resentment in Jermain Dawson's voice seemed to grow stronger and stronger. "Chad is a millionaire. He makes a lot of money every time he fights but he doesn't do anything for his family. He don't give us anything. Besides his immediate family, Chad isn't taking care of any of us the way that he should be, and it disgusts me," claimed Jermain Dawson.

^^Jermain Dawson you are not in the ring taking punches Chad Dawson is, Chad is in the ring fightig for his money, he don't have to take care of your growth ass. I hope Chad is ready, because Ward will show him no respect or mercy in the ring.
