Enough speculation already. Andrew Garfield has been officially cast as the new Spider-Man in Sony's upcoming 3D reboot, due to hit screens on July 3, 2012. The studio released the news via a press release.

The new film will begin production in early December, directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce.

Garfield (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) is one of a few names that have been thrown around to take over the role. The list previously included Josh Hutcherson, Jamie Bell (Jumper), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass), Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro) and Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson). But they can stop practicing their web slinging, as Garfield has beaten them all out.

Webb explained his reasoning for choosing Garfield in a statement: "Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker."

Arad added, "I'm incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future."

Ziskin also chimed in, "We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb's direction. We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men. In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen."

If you haven't seen Garfield in anything, that's likely to change by the end of this year. He most recently worked with director David Fincher on The Social Network and starred for Spike Jonze in his robot love story I'm Here, which premiered at Sundance. He also plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.

The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming Sony films.

I can't believe that they are making a reboot of an already shitty franchise. Fuck the Spider-man movies. They never made the translation from Comic to movie. Leave this shit dead.

Theyre gonna need to do something big to make this one interesting....and not use Green Goblin or Sandman as a main villain, shit I dont even mind if its Venom by himself.

But the reason the Superman remake was boring to me is it was the same old story told... how many times can you retell something. Spider Man only came out 8 years ago

Hm

The reboot's intention was to have Peter Parker back to developing his abilities in high school. It is unknown of what the final plot will be.
As of right now, the only confirmed villains are protogoblin and lizard. Though, there could be more. We don't even know how big protogoblin's role is yet, could just be a cameo. Many people suspect Electro or the Big Wheel will make appearances.

Lookin' pretty good, actually. And what's with the hate for the Spiderman movies? The first two are some of the best superhero movies there are.
Thats why theres hate.
The 1st 2 were just as good as you say, then they dropped that deuce that was pt 3, and when they could have had a redeeming pt four they pull this reboot bullshit. The 1st one only came out 9 years ago - why a reboot?

I like most of these comic book movies but I could never get into Spider-Man. I have not liked any of these movies. Maybe since they have changed people and storylines up I will give it another shot.

I wasn't referring to people hating on the reboot. I was referring to Venom's comment calling the already made Spiderman movies a "shitty franchise."

IMO, it doesn't matter if the next one is a sequel or a reboot. If it's good, it's good. I've had enough Toby Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, anyway. Andrew Garfield is at least the same caliber of actor as Maguire, and I really liked Marc Webb's last film 500 Days of Summer. Now this poster comes out and it looks pretty good. So, all I see are good signs thus far.
